Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Let’s Hear What You Have!

Content Area: Language Arts
Grade Level(s): 3rd grade
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE3W6: With guidance and support from adults,
use technology to produce and publish writing (using keyboarding skills) as well as to interact and
collaborate with others.

Technology Standard Addressed: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively
for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to
their goals.

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: KidPub website

URL(s) to support the lesson: http://www.kidpub.com

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing

Opportunity in your classroom:

I would incorporate the use of this online publishing opportunity website in an English Language Arts
lesson. This specific standard requires students to publish their own writing and collaborate with
others. With that in mind, I would give students the opportunity to type either a story or a poem.
Students will have the choice of what topic they would like to write on.

After completing their work, students would be assisted in publishing their work on this publishing
site. Once each student has published their own work, they will then be required to go online to the
KidPub website and give feedback to at least 3 other students work. The students that the students
respond to must be outside the classroom. Students are expected to present constructive feedback and
do so in a professional manner.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a
classroom?

Students will either use class computers or home computers to type the assignment. The assignment
will be reviewed by the teacher and published with the teacher’s assistance on the class computer.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them
may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).

a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond
their school: Students will publish their typed work on the KidPub website for their peers,
near-peers, and others outside of the classroom to view. They will then give constructive
feedback to their peers’ work

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or

producing original products as a result of engaging in a project):.This website gives the
students the opportunity to create their own work and publish it for others to enjoy.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students are expected to think “outside the box” to create an original
piece of work to publish on the KidPub site.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product:
Students will create and publish work that is not only meaningful to them, buts is meaningful to
viewers.

 Supports visual learners

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

Fortunately, this website does not require students to submit their full names with their work. In fact,
KidPub allows students to submit their name under any username that they choose. I would make sure
that when students sign up and publish their website, they do so without attaching their name to their
work. I could work with each student to find a username that is suitable for the website. I would also
have parents sign a waiver that says that gives students permission to post on the website. By using
these strategies, I would still be able to incorporate this website into the lesson, and I would still be
complying with the district’s policies.
Reflective Practice: To move this activity to a LoTi 6, the teacher could publish the writing pieces
made to the classroom website. The final projects could also be published to a website where a whole
team of students and teachers could access them and learn from them.
