SAVE ALPHABET NURSERY!

Wandsworth Council is considering plans to redevelop Northcote library
and Chatham Hall to provide a new state of the art library. However this
would be at a cost of knocking down Chatham Hall and building 3 storey
flats. Allison Mckenzie-Lewis has been the Head teacher at Alphabet
Nursery School based at Chatham Hall for 27 years, which
accommodates between 55-60 children within this community. As you
can imagine they are all devastated and are against this proposal.
A petition has been set up to stop the development, go here:

SCHOOL CHILDREN ENCOURAGED TO

CYCLE AND SCOOT
Schools across South London are invited to join The Big Pedal 2017 -
a national challenge to get more young people cycling and scooting to
school, backed by two times Olympic gold medallist Joanna Rowsell
Shand. The Big Pedal 20- 31 March sees pupils, teachers and parents
leave their cars at home and get on their bikes and scooters, with this
year’s theme being ‘Around the world in 10 days’, so pupils can track
their progress on a map of the world, learning about the countries and
cities they pass through on their way. ‘The Big Pedal campaign is a
fantastic way for kids to cycle together whilst learning about the rules of
the road in a fun way,’ said Joanna Rowsell Shand. ‘I hope this year as
many schools as possible will take part in the UK’s largest school cycling
and scooting event.’ Sign up now at

According to the Head of Sydenham High Junior School, Claire Boyd, the

the skills – psychological as well as academic – that they will need to face

Are you ready for 30 hours of free childcare?

At the moment parents in England are entitled to the equivalent of 15 hours of childcare per week for

To learn language, infants need parents, not tablets
If you are one of those parents who splashed out on an educational app or DVD for your baby, hoping to transform
them into the next Einstein, then read on. For a fascinating new study from New York University shows that the best
learning tool for language development in infants isn’t on a screen, but through face to face time with their parents.

SCREEN TIME IS NOT LEARNING TIME

Contrary to popular belief, babies and infants don’t learn language from
apps, television or videos—even those that come with the word
‘educational’ on them. When babies seem mesmerized by the sounds,
shapes and movement on the screen, we mistake their focus for learning.

But research shows they aren’t actually processing the language that
accompanies the sounds and images. Drawing of children aged 5-6 years having spent
less than one hour of television a day
STUDY
A study compared two groups: the first group of mothers repeated words
such as ‘flower’ ‘grass’ and ‘water’ regularly to their babies during their
day. In the second group the mums were given a DVD of exactly the
same words and pictures to play to their babies. Babies who had been
exposed to the words by their mothers, had actually learned the words.
The DVD babies however, had not. Drawing of children aged 5-6 years having spent

Eleven popular party themes

There are few things that children enjoy more than their birthday party, but as a parent, it can be difficult
to know how to meet their expectations. Whether you're trying to think of an original party idea, or are
determined to keep up with the Joneses, here are eleven popular children party themes that are great
for the little ones (and plenty of fun for you, too!).

SUPERHERO DISNEY
Superhero-themed parties are becoming increasingly gender-friendly, with A tried and tested classic theme is Disney. There are literally hundreds of

TRY Bedazzled: Whether it be fairies saving the captured princess,
pirates searching for treasure, the children will feel like they visited a
magical land and will be chatting about it long after the party finishes.

COOKERY
Another unusual theme to try out is cookery parties. If your children
enjoy baking, making pizza, or even trying their hand at something a little
more complicated, this is for them. There are plenty of restaurants and
cafes that will host children's parties and teach the children to cook. If not,
you can get them all floppy hats, aprons, and rolling pins, and stage your

Children absolutely love a good pirate party to make them go “arghhhh”.
