Following Congressman Robert Pittenger’s defeat in the Republican primary last night, the
general election race is incredibly competitive in North Carolina’s 9th congressional district. At
this stage in the cycle, the race between Democratic candidate Dan McCready is tied with Mark
Harris, leading him by one point, 44% McCready / 43% Harris.
Neither candidate is known at this point, just 23% of voters are familiar with McCready, and 28%
know Harris. Harris enters the race with mixed popularity, just 16% are favorable towards him /
12% are unfavorable. Comparatively, while not well-known at this stage, almost all of
McCready’s name ID is built in positives, 16% favorable / 7% unfavorable.
These results ae based on polling among N=500 likely 2018 general election voters in North
Carolina’s 9th congressional district. The poll was conducted from March 8-13, 2018 and is
subject to a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.
If the November general election for U.S. Congress were held today and the
candidates were Democrat Dan McCready and Republican Mark Harris, for whom
