UNSW Institute of Languages has celebrated 50 years as the first university
operated language centre in Australia. During that time, it has developed

teacher training.
UNSW Foundation Studies has provided pre-university programs since
1989, making it the oldest Foundation program in Australia. Our programs
provide excellent preparation for university study as well as a university
entry qualification.
Both the Institute of Languages and Foundation Studies help international
students from a wide variety of educational backgrounds to meet the
challenging academic entry standards of UNSW and to develop the study,
language and cultural skills needed to succeed at university in Australia.

How does UNSW Foundation Studies calculate a GPA?

You will receive a letter grade for each completed subject. This letter is associated with a numerical grade point (see below).
Overall program performance is expressed as a Grade Point Average (GPA). A GPA is calculated as an average score across
your subjects using your grade point multiplied by the unit value of each respective subject.

Technology at UNSW Sydney.
My name is Alexander Krum and I came to

Sydney from Germany. I wanted to fulfil my dream
of getting a Masters of IT at one of the best
universities worldwide. The Institute of Languages
has played a major role in this life-changing goal.
The more you study at UNSW, the more you
realise how smartly the programs at the Institute of
Languages are designed. I’ve used the skills that
I learned at the Institute of Languages many times.
The teachers at the Institute gave me this know-
how, and I would like to thank them very much for this.
The reason why I’m here is that I believed in
myself many years ago. I was a young technician
at a company which built equipment for the
printing industry. Once, I said to my supervisor
that I thought that the job could be done better
or more efficiently and he replied that he paid me
for working, not for thinking. So I quit that job and
decided to study because I wanted to be paid
for thinking.
A few years later I graduated from my Bachelor
degree as the best student at the faculty and got
offered a scholarship. So I decided to take the next
challenge, I wanted to prove to myself how far I can
go. I decided to study at UNSW, it’s a new country,
a new language, and everything is new and far

A parent's perspective
I have four beautiful children and early
on, my husband and I made a promise
that we would provide them with the best
possible education that we could afford.
When selecting a country, I wanted to be able to see them
during semester breaks. I looked at living costs, standard of
accommodation, safety and my overall peace of mind once
I was separated from them. I discovered that Australia was
close to home, safe, welcoming, offered a good lifestyle
and had many outstanding universities. I also realised
that a pathway program, which provided a good academic
introduction and local classroom experience, was going
to be essential if my children were to succeed.
After considering all the options, I chose the UNSW
Foundation Studies program. Not only did the range of
subjects and teaching standards appeal, but the guaranteed
place in a degree course at UNSW meant I wouldn’t have
to move my children to another university.
My eldest son is currently enrolled in the UNSW Foundation
Studies course. My two daughters have successfully graduated
from UNSW and are now back home working in the family
business. They tell wonderful stories of their friends, the class
activities, the great teachers, vegemite, events on campus, good
restaurants and Sydney’s beaches.
My youngest son, who’s 12, is so excited. He’s already looking
forward to studying at UNSW and can’t wait to go to Sydney
and experience it all for himself.
