Good afternoon everybody. I’m Onik Agustina.

I’m a third semester student at Universitas Negeri

Semarang majoring in English Education Program. Well, before we’re going to the materials, let’s take a
look a video that might blow your mind.

So, what do you think it is about? It is a Chinese Laundry Detergent Advertisement. This commercial is
really racist because it dehumanizes black people and makes it seem like as if dark skin is "dirty".
And white skin is “good/clean”.

That is not col. We have to treat everyone with respect, no matter what their skin colour, background or
culture.

So today, I’m going to tell l you more about racism and how to fight it here

What is Racism?

Racism is an ugly word that has been around as long as humankind itself. Racism actually can be broken Commented [71]: Umat manusia

down into two different definitions: on the one hand it simply means that groups of people are defined
by their inherent differences (skin color, culture, appearance) and that, because of these differences, Commented [72]: In’hierent, yg melekat

one group is seen to be better than the other. The second definition of racism is the unfair treatment of
others based purely on these differences. Throughout history, humankind has treated others with insult Commented [73]: Throout seanjang

and committed violence upon them just because of the color of their skin or the culture from which they
come.

Why are people racist?

We take on the views of people around us

A lot of our attitudes are shaped when we're young. When our family members or friends express racist
opinions, without knowing it, we will be affected and do the same.

We only hang around with people "like us"

It's normal to want to spend time with people that have the same interests, background, culture and
language. It creates a sense of belonging that is really important. The downside is that it can also set up
differences between other groups and, over time, this might lead to us to thinking that our group is
better than others.
We're quick to judge

We often put labels on people. He dresses like this so he must be into this music. She goes to that school
so she must be rich. We can also stereotype people from different racial backgrounds as "lazy", "brainy",
"aggro"… you get the idea. The way to beat the stereotypes? Don't judge a whole group. Get to know
people from different racial backgrounds and find out how much you have in common.

Who experiences racism?

Anyone can experience racist behaviour, such as being abused because of the colour of your skin,
background or culture.. It's never okay, even as a one-off incident. And it's even worse for people who
experience it frequently, many of whom also experience discrimination in other areas of their lives.

Our survey of 2380 young people aged 13-17 found that 89% had either experienced or witnessed
racism. Racism most commonly happened at school (43%) or online (33%).

Where does racism happen?

At school

Being bullied or made fun of because of your race

For example

Maybe you’ve seen how some UNNES students made jokes of Ngapak people which is minority and
have different accent that we found it’s funny .

At home

Family members criticizing or making offensive jokes about people from different racial backgrounds.

In my family for example, there was the time when my dad was watching news on TV about Chinese
Mafia who arrested and he was saying some kind of racist opinions like “ Bloody Chinese is the killer.”
“Go back your mainisland” , said my father to the Television.

Online, Social media

Making offensive jokes

In public

Racism looks like: Being abused, being called names, being spat at, having things thrown at you or when
people act aggressively to you.

For example, when we go somewhere and we see western people with White skin, blonde hair. and
we’re saying like “Bule lu”
