Purpose
According to Shape America, health education is a subject that is equally important —

arguably, more important — than other core subjects. It is a subject that belongs in schools and

that should be recognized as critical to students’ education and development. The department of

education states that health education curricula and instruction help students learn skills they will

use to make healthy choices throughout their lifetime. Effective curriculum result in positive

changes in behavior that lower student risks around: alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, injury

prevention, mental and emotional health, nutrition, physical activity, prevention of diseases and

sexuality and family life. The time, instruction, and support devoted to health education should

be similar to that of other core subjects.

Module Topic

Tobacco at a national level continues to grow especially in youth adolescents in the

United States. An estimated 45.3 million people, or 19.3% of all adults (aged 18 years or older),

in the United States smoke cigarettes in 2010. Every day, more than 1,200 people in this country

die due to smoking. There could be 3 million fewer young smokers today if success in reducing

youth tobacco use that was made between 1997 and 2003 had been sustained. This supports why

it would be beneficial for schools to educate on tobacco use, abuse, and prevention.
