Algebra2/Trig Review Test 2 Name Per:

1. For a given function, F, what is meant by the notation “F(3)”?

2. Given two linear equations, graph them; determine the exact point of intersection.
Ex.: 2x – 3y = 8 and 3x + 5y = 15
3. Determine the equation of the line through two given points. Ex: (–3, 1) and (1, –11)
4. Write a linear function that is parallel to and/or perpendicular to a given line. Ex: 9x – 4y = 17.
5. Given the slope and a point of a linear function, find it’s equation. Ex. slope − 54 and contains (2, 3)
6. Given a quadratic function in general form, e.g. y = x2 + 2x – 8 or y = x2 + 5x + 2,
a) graph it and/or state points of interest (vertex, intercepts) b) write it in standard form
c) state the concavity d) state the intervals of increase and decrease
7. Given a quadratic in standard form, e.g. y = (x + 2)2 – 5,
a) graph it and/or state points of interest (vertex, intercepts) b) state the concavity
c) state the intervals of increase and decrease

8. Determine the equation of a parabola given 3 of its points (by hand, or with GC)
Ex: “nice” (by hand) (1, 4) (–1, –4) (4, 31); using GC : “make up” your own points, if you wish

9. Graph and know the domain, range, concavitiy, intervals of increase / decrease for these functions:
Exponential: y = abx for both b > 1 [ex: y = 2(4x)] and 0 < b < 1 [y = 4(0.25x)]
Power functions: y = xn [y = x2 ; y = x3 ; y = x4 ; y = x5 ; ……. ]
Absolute value function: y = | x | ; y = | x2 | ; . . . . .

10. Given the graph of a function, f(x), graph its opposite (– f(x) ) and its abs. value ( | f(x) | )
y y y

x x x

12. Use exponential functions to solve problems involving growth and/or decay, including half-life situations.

a) $300 dollars grow to $400 in 8 years. What is the growth rate per year?

b) The half-life of Ryherdium is 90 days. In how many days will 30 pounds of Ryherdium become 2 pounds?

c) A tooth is decaying at a rate of 0.17 mg per hour. How much of a 40 mg molar is left in 3 days?

13. Even and odd functions:

Know the properties and answer questions pertaining to these properties (see quiz 2B);

The point (–5, –2) is on the graph of an odd function. So is what other point?

The point (–5, –2) is on the graph of an even function. So is what other point?

The points (a,b) and (–a,b) must be on a/an (even / odd / neither) function.

The points (a,b) and (–a, –b) must be on a/an (even / odd / neither) function.

The points (a,b) and (a, –b) must be on a/an (even / odd / neither) function.

Odd functions have what symmetry? Even functions?

An odd function is decreasing on x > 0, so it must be increasing on

Determine if a function is even or odd (or neither), being able to prove your answer.

x2 – x x3 – x x5 – x3 – x x+7 2x x-4

14. Sketch the graph of a relation which is symmetric to the x-axis. y = x2 y = x4 x=|y|

15. Graph a piecewise function.

y = 8(2) x , − 2 < x < 0
