Lesson Idea Name: Question Words

Content Area: English Language Arts- Reading Literacy
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE2RL1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when,
why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner: c. Use technology to seek feedback that informs their
practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Movie (list application): iMovie
☐ Audio (list application):
☒ Other: (list) PowerPoint
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☒ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

 Supports ELL students
 Students are collaborating in groups
 Supports Visual learners
 Support Kinesthetic learners
 Supports Auditory learners
Lesson idea implementation:
I will present my iMovie to the class about question words. I will then read a story to students and we will
identify the who, what, when, where, why and how from the story. I will record this information on the board.
The students will then split into groups’, each group will be responsible to read a different story. Together the
students will create their own PowerPoint to identify the who, what, when, where, why, and how from their
story. The students should use each question word and provide visuals.
To conclude this lesson each group will read their story then present their presentation to the class. After
each presentation, I will be able to verbally communicate my feedback over the students’ presentation and
ensure the question words were referenced. The students will able to ask and answer such questions as who,
what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. To further the
students Loti level of learning, they could present their slideshow to another classroom.
Importance of technology:
Using multimedia is beneficial for all students because they are being introduced to technology they may
be able to use in the future. This project could be done without technology, but I wouldn’t have an iMovie clip
to hook my students and the students wouldn’t be using PowerPoint. Instead the students could write on a
poster board and present to the class. In my opinion, students need to be familiar with PowerPoint
technology, then they could further their knowledge by learning how to make an iMovie on an iPad or Mac.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

School and/or school district have internet policies and procedures – for good reason. To minimize the risks
for students participating in this activity, I will monitor each group as they search through databases to find
images for their PowerPoints. When using the internet we want to keep students safe and teach them to
closely monitor their digital record.
Reflective Practice:
The students will able to ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to
demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. By implementing this activity the students are learning by
reading and collaborating with others. I would provide the students with feedback as they were creating their
PowerPoints’. If students are struggling with this task then I would provide the students with guided questions
and questions using the Question words. To enhance the project to the next LoTi level I would collaborate
with another teacher in the school to see if my students could present their presentation to the other class.
