Lesson Idea Name: Weather Observations

Content Area: Science- Earth and Space Science
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S1E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate weather data to identify weather
patterns.
c. Plan and carry out investigations on current weather conditions by observing, measuring with simple
weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane, rain gauge), and recording weather data (temperature,
precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in a periodic journal, on a calendar, and graphically.

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor: c. curate information from digital resources using
a variety of tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections and
conclusions.

Lesson idea implementation:
On my Blog, I posted an assignment for students to complete at home during the weekend. Specifically
students should record the current weather data such as the temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and
weather events throughout the weekend. The students should record their data on paper and provide
pictures, or record their own audio clip containing the data.
Students will be responsible for bringing their data to class on Monday. During our science lesson, I will
replay my audio clip. Students will communicate their data to the class. I will be recording the different data
on the board. This learning experience is student-centered and the students may even have different results.
The students will be able to identify the different weather patterns based off of their locations over the
weekend. After this we can check weather sites to compare with their data to ours. From this activity
students will be obtaining, evaluating, and communicating weather data to identify weather patterns. To get
students to a higher Loti level, they will have to record the data in an Excel chart and share the results with
the local News station.
Importance of technology:
On my Blog, I posted an audio clip of what they should do for the assignment, as well as a dialog for that
clip. The students were also provided a handout of my expectations for their weather observation activity.

The students could have just been provided a handout, but the audio clip may assist al students. As I
mentioned above, the students could record all their classmates’ data in an Excel spreadsheet.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

When using the internet we want to keep students safe and teach them to closely monitor their digital
record. For instance, when the students use the school internet, it is the counties responsibility to administer
policies in order to protect students’ privacy and safety. With this activity students will either be recording
their observations on paper or through an audio recording. This information will not be shared outside the
classroom unless upgraded to the next LoTi level. The various weather sites we visit will be protected by the
schools internet policies.
Reflective Practice:
From this activity students will be obtaining, evaluating, and communicating weather data to identify
weather patterns. We will then look at various weather sites to see if they were accurate or not. Since I
posted the audio clip of instructions on my classroom blog, I would like to get the students feedback to see if
this was helpful. To further this lesson, I would like the students to record all their classmates’ data into an
Excel spreadsheet. To get students to a higher Loti level, they will have to record the data in an Excel chart
and share the results with the local News station.
