DRAFT RECAP: The Mariners selected 40 players in the 2018 Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft, highlighted by their
first pick, RHP Logan Gilbert, who was the 14th overall selection in the draft. 21 pitchers, 3 catchers, 11 infielders (6 2B, 4 SS, 1 3B)
and 5 outfielders. Seattle selected 33 college players and 7 high school players. In all, 34 of the Mariners 40 draft picks signed
contracts and been assigned to minor league teams.
WELCOME TO SEATTLE: The Mariners Selected RHP Logan Gilbert out of Stetson University with their first selection with their first
selection in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft, 14th overall. Gilbert, 21, was named ASUN (Atlantic Sun Conference) Pitcher of the
Year and received ASUN 1st-Team All-Conference honors in 2017. He received All-America honors from both Perfect Game (3rd-
Team) and Collegiate Baseball (2nd-Team), and was selected preseason All-America by Collegiate Baseball (2nd-Team) and Perfect
Game (1st-Team) prior to his junior year in 2018. As a junior in 2018, Gilbert has posted a 2.52 ERA while going 11-1 with 157
strikeouts and 23 walks in 15 starts. His 157 strikeouts lead NCAA Division-1 baseball this season, while his 0.82 WHIP is 5th (min. 1
IP/team game). Over the course of three seasons with Stetson University, the 6-foot-6, 225-pound right-hander posted a 23-2 record
with a 2.38 ERA (65 ER, 245.1 IP) with 307 strikeouts and 75 walks in 51 games (32 starts) while allowing only 11 home runs. He was
named ASUN Pitcher of the Week twice in 2017, and was recognized by Perfect Game, Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America and
College Sports Madness as National Pitcher of the Week after falling 3 outs short of a no-hitter in a complete-game shutout vs. Florida
Golf Coast on April 9, 2017. He tallied 18 strikeouts in the shutout, the 3rd-most strikeouts in a game by any Division-I pitcher in 2017.
Prior to his time at Stetson, Gilbert was ranked among the top 75 prospects in the state of Florida and the top 500 prospects in the
nation by Perfect Game. He received honorable mention All-America and All-Florida from Rawlings-Perfect Game.
PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Arkansas Travelers center fielder Braden Bishop was named Texas League Player of the Month for June
it was announced by Minor League Baseball. Bishop hit .379 (39x103) with 24 runs scored, 8 doubles, 3 home runs, 12 RBI, 2 HBP, 10
walks and 1 stolen baes in 24 games. He led the Texas League in average (.379), runs (24), hits (39), total bases (56), and on-base
percentage (.443). Bishop finished 2ndnd in doubles (8) and OPS (.987) and 3rd in extra-base hits (11). For the season, Bishop is
batting .289 (95x329) with 67 runs scored, 20 doubles, 7 home runs, 31 RBI, 3 HBP, 36 walks and 4 stolen bases in 79 games. Since
May 5 he has raised his season average from a season-low .154 averge to his current .289 average. Bishop was voted as a Texas
League midseason All-Star and was the starting centerfielder for the North Division as well as being named a league player of the week
earlier this season. Off the field, he is renowned for creating and promoting the 4Mom charity to raise money and awareness for
Alzheimer’s Disease after his mother’s diagnosis in 2014. He was the fifth round selection of the Mariners in 2015 out of the University
of Washington. Bishop, 24, was selected by Seattle in the third round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of
Washington.
WHAT A CAREER: C Mike Marajama informed the club on July 6 he was retiring. He will be taking a new position with the National
Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). Marjama, 28, made his first Opening Day roster this season, including catching Felix Hernandez
on Opening Night. In all, he appeared in 10 of the season’s first 17 games, hitting .111 (3x27) with 3 doubles, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.
He was optioned to AAA Tacoma on April 20. In 43 games with the Rainiers this season, Marjama hit .247 (39x158) with 22 runs, 9
doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs and 23 RBI. He has been on the disabled list since June 19 with a concussion. Marjama was acquired
by Seattle from Tampa Bay on Aug. 6, 2017. He made his MLB debut on Sept. 3, 2017 as a defensive replacement at catcher. He
made his first MLB start on September 27, and was 2-for-4 with a double. He hit .167 (13x78) with 5 runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home
runs and 12 RBI in 21 games with AAA Tacoma after being acquired by Seattle and prior to his MLB recall. Mike started the season at
AAA Durham, where he appeared in 72 games and hit .274 (72x263) with 16 doubles, 9 home runs and 51 RBI. Marjama was originally
selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 23rd round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft out of Long Beach State University. In seven
minor league seasons, he is a .275 hitter (490x1783) with 112 doubles, 12 triples, 37 home runs and 240 runs batted in.
HEADING TO JAPAN: On July 5, the Mariners released RHP Ariel Miranda for an opportunity to sign with a team in Japan. Miranda,
29, who will pursue a playing opportunity in Japan, appeared in 43 games over parts of 3 seasons with the Mariners. He made his
Major League debut with Baltimore on June 3, 2016 before being acquired by Seattle in exchange for LHP Wade Miley on July 31,
2016. With the Mariners, he compiled a record of 13-9 with a 4.64 ERA (114 ER, 221.0 IP) with 151 strikeouts and 85 walks in 43
games, including 40 starts. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound left-hander made 1 start with the Mariners this season, taking a no decision on
April 17 vs. Houston. Miranda has spent the majority of the season with AAA Tacoma, where he went 5-0 with a 3.97 ERA (20 ER, 45.1
IP) with 40 strikeouts and 24 walks in 10 games (9 starts). He also made 1 start with high-A Modesto this season. In 2017, Miranda was
8-7 with a 5.12 ERA (91 ER, 160.0 IP) with 137 strikeouts and 63 walks in 31 games, including 29 starts, with the Mariners. It marked
his first full season in the Major Leagues, as he led the club in starts and innings pitched while ranking 2nd in wins and strikeouts. In
parts of three Major League seasons with the Orioles (2016) and Mariners (2016-18), Miranda is 13-9 with a 4.72 ERA (117 ER, 223.0
IP) with 186 strikeouts and 85 walks in 44 career appearances (40 starts). A native of Havana, Cuba, he originally signed with Baltimore
as a non-drafted free agent on May 27, 2015.
EVERETT HIGHLIGHTS: INF Connor Kopach is batting .312 (29x93) with 18 runs scored, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 9 RBI, 2
HBP, 8 walks and 7 stolen bases in his first 25 games with Everett. INF Bobby Honeyman hit safely in his first 12 consecutive games
to begin his career, batting .370 (17x46) with 5 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 5 RBI, 4 walks and 1 stolen base. His 12-game hitting
streak was T3rd longest in the Northwest League in the first half of the season. Reliever Joey Gerber was 1-0 with a team-high 5 saves
and a 1.86 ERA (2 ER, 9.2 IP) in first 9 games with Everett. He limited opponents to a .206 average, while walking 3 and striking out 13.
Starters Orlando Razo (1st/31.1 IP), Carlos Hernandez (T6th/28.0 IP), Max Roberts (T6th/28.0 IP) and Jheyson Caraballo
(11th/26.2) each rank among the Northwest League leaders in innings pitched.
DSL LEADER: In his first professional season, OF Julio Rodriguez hit. .336 (45x134) with 30 runs scored, 11 doubles, 3 triples, 2
home runs, 24 RBI, 4 HBP, 18 walks and 5 stolen bases. The All-Star outfielder ranked among the Dominican Summer League leaders
in total bases (T1st/68), hits (3rd/45), doubles (T3rd/11), extra-base hits (T5th/16) and runs scored (T6th/31). INF Osiris Castillo hit
safely in 26 of his first 30 games, batting .339 (38x113) with 13 runs scored, 5 doubles, 12 RBI, 2 HBP, 9 walks and 4 stolen bases. He
recorded a season-high 16-game hitting streak, June 4-26, batting .419 (26x62) with 7 runs scored, 2 doubles, 4 RBI and 6 walks. His
16-game hitting streak was T2nd-longest in the DSL in the first half of the season. In his second season in the DSL, RHP Juan
Mercedes is leading the team in nearly every pitching category, going 4-0 with a 1.64 ERA (6 ER, 33.0 IP) in 8 games 6 starts. He has
limited opponents to a .174 (21x21) average, while walking 6 and striking out 27. His 4 win are currently T4th-most in the DSL. RHP
Jesus Ozoria has allowed only 1 earned run in 23.0 innings over 7 games this season. Overall he is 3-1 with a 0.39 ERA (1 ER, 23.0
