Educational organisation
The Master of Science programme is four semesters
long. During the first semester, all students take the
same modules and courses and concentrate on the
basics of mechanics, statics and dynamics, numerical
methods, discretisation methods and software
engineering.
All courses not only provide an extensive introduction
but also a deep knowledge of the most important areas
in the field of computational mechanics of materials
and structures.
During the second and third semesters, subjects can
be chosen from a large variety of courses. In order to
establish and promote international interaction, further
advanced subjects are delivered in summer school by
internationally recognised experts.
The fourth semester is dedicated to the thesis. It is
embedded into the current scientific activities of the
participating research groups.
On successful completion of the programme (120
ECTS credits), students are awarded a Master of
Science and will be entitled to continue to study for a
doctoral degree without having to meet additional
academic requirements. Special PhD programmes in
this field are offered at the University of Stuttgart.

Tuition fees
From the winter semester 2017/2018 onwards, degree-
seeking students from non-EU countries are required
to pay 1,500 EUR in tuition fees per semester.

Enrolment fees
Approx. 170 EUR per semester

Costs of living
To cover living expenses, you will need about 750 EUR
per month. This is for rent (approx. 300-350 EUR),
health insurance for non-EU residents (approx. 80
EUR), the semester ticket for public transport (190
EUR/six months), food (approx. 200 EUR), other
incidental expenses, and working materials (approx.
100 EUR).

Job opportunities
Owing to its location in the heart of one of Europe's
largest high-tech regions, there are some opportunities
to find employment. Nevertheless, please do not
expect to be able to finance your studies entirely by
working. The study load is very high and it is not
always easy to find a part-time job. Non-EU citizens
are allowed by law to work for a maximum of 120 full
days (240 half days) per year. Students who are
employed by the university in one of the institutes or
departments ("studentische Hilfskräfte") are exempt
from this regulation, but other restrictions apply. You
are not allowed to work during the first year while
attending a German language class in preparation for
the test of German as a foreign language (TestDaF).

Language requirements
A TOEFL (CB) score of 213 points or equivalent test
results (e.g. TOEFL iBT 80 or TOEFL PBT 550, IELTS
Band 6.0) as proof of sufficient knowledge of English
International students without prior knowledge of the
German language have to attend the German intensive
language course preceding the programme in
September.

Academic requirements
BSc in engineering, natural sciences, or equivalent
TOEFL, minimum 60 points (Internet-based test) or
equivalent test results (e.g. TOEFL PBT 550, IELTS
Band 6.0) as proof of sufficient knowledge of English

About the university

The University of Stuttgart is one of the leading
technology-oriented universities in Germany with global
significance. Located in the heart of an economically
strong region with vast cultural integration, the
university sees itself as a hub of university-based
research as well as non-university and industrial
research. Furthermore, it takes a role as a guarantor of
research-based teaching, focused on quality and
holism. The university is dedicated to researching and
strengthening the interfaces between technology,
society, and culture in an interdisciplinary manner,
defined as the "Stuttgart Way".
This means the integration of engineering, natural
sciences, humanities, and social sciences based on the
fundamentals of cutting-edge research at a disciplinary
level. The University of Stuttgart implements innovative
concepts in research and teaching in order to provide
knowledge and strategies for meaningful and

that is both knowledge-oriented as well as application-
related. The university is actively part of regional,
national, and international research networks.
The University of Stuttgart is committed to the principle
of unity between research and teaching. Students
acquire knowledge, expertise, and the power of
judgement in accord with the guidelines of scientific
research and awareness. The university fosters
fascination for the sciences, supporting its students
and junior researchers at all stages of their careers. It
promotes independent thinking and provides an
environment for responsible action. In doing so, the
university educates individuals to become exceptional
experts who are globally-minded integrative thinkers
ready to act responsibly in sciences, the economy, and
society.

Cranko, theatres, concert and musical halls, art
galleries, and various museums. The Stuttgart area is
one of Europe's strongest high-tech regions. The
region is specialised in industries such as car
manufacturing, environmental technologies, machine
tools, electronics, information, and communication
technology. Many internationally-renowned companies
such as Bosch, Daimler, Porsche, and IBM Germany
have their headquarters and factories in the greater
Stuttgart area. In addition, numerous smaller
companies producing machine tools, textiles, precision
instruments, and luxury items are located here.
