Tutorial 1
1. A new scale N of temperature is divided in such a way that the freezing point of ice is 100°𝑁
and the boiling point is 400°𝑁. What is the temperature reading on this new scale when the
temperature is 150°𝐶?

2. The temperature 𝑡 on a thermometric scale is defined in terms of a property K by the

relation
𝑡 = 𝑎 ln 𝐾 + 𝑏
Where a and b are constants.
The value of K are found to be 1.83 and 6.78 at the ice point and the steam point, the
temperatures of which are assigned to the number 0 and 100 respectively. Determine the
temperature corresponding to a reading of K equal to 2.42 on the thermometer.

3. The resistance of the windings in a certain motor is found to be 80 ohms at room

temperature (25°C). When operating at full load under steady state conditions, the motor is
switched off and the resistance of the windings, immediately measured again, is found to be
93 ohms. The windings are made of copper whose resistance at temperature t°C is given by
𝑅𝑡 = 𝑅0 [1 + 0.0093𝑡]
Where 𝑅0 is the resistance at 0℃. Find the temperature attained by the coil during full load.

4. When a body A is in thermal equilibrium with a body B, and also separately with a body C,
then B and C will be in thermal equilibrium with each other.
a. True
b. False

5. Which of the following were used as fixed points before 1954?

c. All of the mentioned
d. None of the mentioned

6. What is the standard fixed point of thermometry?
