4. Known Problems and Limitations

At the time of release, there are no priority 1 defects outstanding. However, the following problems
and limitations are known to exist with the 1101192-A release of the Remote Terminal Viewer.
N When attempting a file download or flash file system format operation with the flash memory
disabled, the RTU does not report the correct error code. Consequently, RTV is not able to
report the correct error message to the user (SIR 43503).
N Downloading large files via OptoNet may fail due to large delays in flash file system access in
the RTU.

5. Installation Instructions

5.1 Installing under Windows

On Windows workstations, the Remote Terminal Viewer must be installed using the graphical
installation program on the release CDROM.
Depending on which product(s) you have purchased, the RTV installer may be packaged on its own,
or may be included as part of a larger installation package. If purchased on its own, the RTV installer
will start automatically when the release CDROM is loaded into the engineer’s workstation.
Otherwise, a simple installation menu will be displayed automatically when the release CDROM is
loaded into the engineer’s workstation, allowing the user to choose which of the included products are
to be installed.
When the RTV installation program has started, follow the on-screen prompts. In accordance with
Microsoft guidelines, the Remote Terminal Viewer is installed under the C:\Program
Files\Foxboro directory by default.
When the installation has finished, a desktop shortcut and a Start Menu entry for RTV will be created.

5.2 Installing under Solaris

For Solaris installation, a Tar/GZip archive is provided. If RTV is being installed for the use of multiple
users, it should be installed by the super-user in a publicly accessible directory, e.g. opt/rtv.
Each user will need to set the shell variable RTV_HOME to the path in which RTV has been installed.
This can be done globally by adding the appropriate command to the global profile (usually
/etc/profile) or to the user’s own profile.
For RTV to function correctly, the Sun Java Runtime Environment must be correctly installed and
accessible. Version 1.4.1 or later is required for this version of RTV. The “rtv” shell script in the
installation directory may need to be modified to ensure that RTV uses the correct installation of the
Java Runtime Environment.
If serial communications are required, the Java Serial Communications library (available from
http://java.sun.com/products/javacomm/) must be installed. Installation instructions are
available at the above website.

5.3 Launching RTV

Windows users can launch the Remote Terminal Viewer by using the desktop or Start Menu shortcuts
installed for Windows users, or by running the RTV.EXE program from the installation directory.
Solaris users can launch the Remote Terminal Viewer by running the “rtv” shell script from the
installation directory.
When RTV starts, it will present the user with the “New Connection” dialog box. From this dialog, the
user can select the communications medium (TCP/IP, serial, or DNP3 File Transfer Agent) and can
enter the appropriate settings for the selected communications medium. Clicking on the “OK” button
connects RTV to the selected RTU using the current settings.

I/A Series Intelligent SCADA System Page 9 of 16

Remote Terminal Viewer Software Release Note
1101192-A

If desired, the user can enter a name with which to identify the settings and click on the “Save” button
to store the named settings for future use. The user will then be able to double-click on a name in the
“Saved Connections” list to establish a connection using the saved settings.
Alternatively, RTV can be given command line options to connect directly to an RTU. There are three
possible command line formats:
rtv –s <port> <speed> (for serial communication)
rtv –t <host> <port> (for TCP/IP communication)
rtv –d <master> <port> <RTU name> (for DNP3 File Transfer Agent)
In the first version of the command, <port> is the name of the PC serial port to be used for the
connection and <speed> is the bit rate to be used for the connection (usually 19200). On Microsoft
Windows machines, the communications ports are named COM1, COM2, and so on. On Solaris
machines, the name of the serial port device file is used, e.g. /dev/cua/a, /dev/cua/b, etc.

Figure 1 - RTV's New Connection Dialog

In the second version of the command, <host> is a TCP/IP hostname (e.g. rtu1.foxboro.com.au) or
address (e.g. 192.168.1.1) and <port> is the TCP/IP port configured on the RTU for diagnostic
communications (usually 20476). Note that TCP/IP communications will only be available if the RTU
is already running with a valid TCP/IP configuration and TCP/IP enabled RTU software.

I/A Series Intelligent SCADA System Page 10 of 16

Remote Terminal Viewer Software Release Note
1101192-A

The third version of the command communicates with an RTU via the DNP3 File Transfer Agent
(FTA) of a Foxboro Master Station. The <master> parameter is the TCP/IP hostname or address of
the Master Station, <port> is the TCP/IP port of the Master Station FTA (usually 45454) and <RTU
name> is the string configured on the Master Station to identify the target RTU.

5.4 RTV Basics

When RTV connects to an RTU, it will divide the main window into three areas as shown in Figure 2.
Beneath the menu bar is the RTU Summary area, which lists the RTU name and OptoNet node
number, the current RTU time, the current RTU CPU idle percentage and the connection details.
The left-hand pane below the RTU Summary area shows the currently connected RTU, expanded to
show it’s configured I/O, calculation and communications modules, and any other RTUs connected to
the current RTU via OptoNet. When a new connection is established the name of the connected RTU
is selected in the left-hand pane and the System Monitor (SysMon) details for that RTU are shown in
a window in the right-hand pane.

Figure 2 - The RTV Main Window

I/A Series Intelligent SCADA System Page 11 of 16

Remote Terminal Viewer Software Release Note

Figure 3 - Browsing an OptoNet with RTV

The other RTUs and some of the configured modules can be further expanded by clicking on the
expansion icon next to them, as shown in Figure 3.
The details for other RTUs or modules can be displayed in the right-hand pane by clicking on that
item in the left-hand pane. This will replace the window in the right-hand pane. To open the item in a
new window in the right-hand pane, right click the item in the left-hand pane and select “Open in New
Window”.
The windows in the right-hand pane will automatically refresh to provide an up-to-date view of the
state of the RTU. The user should note, however, that the rate of refresh for each window will be
slower if more windows are open.
The user can move between multiple windows in the right-hand pane using the Window menu, which
lists all of the open windows.
In the left-hand pane, any RTU or module shown in regular black text is functioning correctly. Any
RTU or module shown in red, italic text is reporting errors. The error messages associated with an
RTU or module can be viewed by right clicking on the RTU or module and selecting “Properties”. The
Properties window also shows the module properties for a module, or the System Monitor (SysMon)
properties for an RTU.
In the example shown in Figure 4, both the error list and the hardware readback code show that the
selected Multiserial communications card is not installed in the RTU.
In many of RTV’s windows, various data values have a diamond shaped button next to them. This
button indicates that the data value is stored in an RTU database point. Clicking on the diamond
button brings up a Details window for the database point, as shown in Figure 5.
The appearance of the Details window will vary slightly depending on the type of database point that
is being viewed. For digital sequence-of-events (DiSOE) points, a list of the last ten events on the
point will be included in the Details window. For Control points, timestamps for the most recent
request and operate actions on the point will be shown. For older RTU Software versions, the point
attributes will not be shown.

5.5 RTV Menus

The RTU menu provides the ability to return to the New Connection dialog box to establish a
connection to a different RTU, to disconnect from the current RTU, to set the system time of the
current RTU, and to reset the current RTU.
The Screen menu provides the ability to open the left-hand pane’s currently selected item in a new
window in the right-hand pane and to open a Properties window for the left-hand pane’s currently
selected item. These options are also available by right-clicking on the appropriate item in the left-
hand pane.
The Window menu lists all of the windows that are presently open in the right-hand pane. Selecting a
window from the Window menu brings that window to the front.
The Help menu provides entry to the Help Contents page and to the help page for the current context.
It also provides access to RTV’s About dialog box, which displays RTV’s version and copyright
information.

5.6 The File System Window

The File System window, shown in Figure 6, allows the user to manipulate the RTU flash file system.
The drop-down lists at the top of the File System window are used to select software, configuration
and calculation files to be loaded when the RTU is next reset. Two software, two configuration and
three calculation files may be selected. The radio-buttons to the left of the drop-down lists are used to
select which software and configuration files are to be used as the primary files. The unselected pair
of files will be used by the RTU as backup files if the primary files are corrupted.

The Commit button is used to save the current drop-down list selections to the RTU flash memory.
The Discard button is used to revert to the last set of selections saved to the flash memory, discarding
any changes made since the last Commit.
Below the drop-down lists, the file list shows information about the files that are currently stored in the
RTU flash memory. At any time, the user can click the Refresh button to reread the file list from the
RTU.
The Download button allows the user to transfer files from their workstation to the RTU flash memory.
After selecting the source files on the workstation, the user will be able to enter new names for each
file or to keep the existing names.
The user may also select one or more files from the file list and click Upload to transfer the files from
the RTU to their workstation or to click Delete to remove the files from the RTU flash memory.
Finally, the Format button will allow the user to reformat the RTU flash memory, removing all files.

5.7 Online Help

RTV provides extensive online help. The Help index can be accessed via the Help | Contents menu
item or context sensitive help can be accessed by pressing F1.
Additional explanation of various I/O card or protocol-specific items can be found in the user manuals
for those subsystems, which are listed in Section 6.
