A Magnetizing and Illuminating

Talk on the Rare Lanthanides

Themes and Differentials
From Caesium to Lutetium
What are the Lanthanides?
• The lanthanide or lanthanoid series
comprises
p the fifteen elements with
atomic numbers 57 through 71, from
lanthanum to lutetium.
What are the Lanthanides?
• All lanthanide elements form trivalent
cations,, Ln3+

• "rare earths" is sometimes used to

describe all the lanthanides
Why are they called rare Earth
elements?
• rare earth elements or rare earth metals
are a set of seventeen chemical elements in the
periodic table, specifically the fifteen
lanthanoids plus scandium and yttrium.[2]
Scandium and yttrium are considered rare
earth elements since they tend to occur in the
same ore deposits as the lanthanoids and
exhibit similar chemical properties.
Why are they called rare Earth
elements?
• Despite their name, rare earth elements (with the
exception of the radioactive promethium) are relatively
plentiful in the Earth crust, with cerium being the 25th
Earth'ss crust
most abundant element at 68 parts per million
(similar to copper). However, because of their
geochemical properties rare earth elements are
typically dispersed and not often found in
concentrated and economicallyy exploitable
p forms
known as rare earth minerals. It was the very scarcity of
these minerals (previously called "earths") that led to
the term "rare
rare earth"
earth
Why are they called rare Earth
elements?
• Neodymium is more abundant than gold
and even thulium ,,the least common
naturally occurring lanthanide, is more
abundant than iodine.
Hidden
• Despite their abundance, even the
technical term "lanthanides" could be
interpreted to reflect a sense of
elusiveness on the p part of these
elements, as it comes from the Greek
((lanthanein),
), "to lie hidden”
• The Lanthanides have a property of
hiding behind each other in minerals
"hiding"
Hidden
• Need to be extracted from other metals.
• Lanthanum means hidden
• Lanthanides need to hide their nature in
order to adapt
What are some of the chemical
properties of the Lanthanides
• The similarity in ionic radius between
adjacent
j lanthanide elements makes it
difficult to separate them from each
other in naturallyy occurring
g ores and
other mixtures

Samarium
Samarium
• Samarium is being used in electric guitar pickups
where the goal is to create a single coil pickup that
is immune to 60 cycle hum and noise. A guitar
pickup is nothing more than a magnet with a coil
off wire
i wrappedd aroundd it. i This
hi “pickup”
“ i k ” not
only translates the vibration of guitar strings into
an electronic signal strong enough to be sent to an
amplifier.... but it also is very sensitive to all sorts
of electronic interference. Radio waves, buzzing

li ht etc..
t I th
In the early
l
days of electric guitars, it was discovered that two
“pickup”
p p coils placed
p next to each other in
opposite electronic orientation, could prevent the
amplification of those unwanted noise sources.
Samarium
• However, these new “humbucking” pickups had a
very different sonic characteristic. Ever since, the
manufacturers of single coil guitar pickups have
been trying to make a single coil sounding pickup
that was also immune to external
noise. Apparently the Samarium magnet is a key
component in that quest.
