1. ANALYSIS PROCEDURES/CRITERIA
The basis of Aluminium Internal Floating Roof (AIFR) design in API-650 , 11th Edition APPENDIX-H, Addendum #2. Appendix-H in API-650
specifies requirementsfor load combinations and various factors that govern the design of Internal Floating Roofs. The design of the
AIFR meets all the requirements and standards of thecode. This code are attached.
The foam dam design and its applications are governed by the NFPA-11 Standards, API2000 6th Edition is used for calculating the venting
requirements for AtmosphericTanks with an AIFR. Though this Standard does not apply to free-vented AIFR tanks, this methodology is
conservative in venting design practices.
API-650 APPENDIX-H does not specify requirements for tolerances or seismic effects fort he design of an Internal Floating Roof.
Seismic effects should be considered while designing the tank itself. Since the AIFR is component of the designed, an addtional
tolerance level for seismicity on the roof is not required.
Internal Flaoting Roofs are regulated by EPA & AP-42 , 5th Edition. AP-42 was published in January 1995 and since then EPA has published
supplements and updates to the fifteen chapters available in Volume-1. Stationary Point and Area Sources. AP-42 basically serves as an
Emission inventory and for the purpose of emission calculations; ATECO uses CFR-40-PART 60.
The type of Alloy Used in design of an Internal Floating Roof is mainly dependent on “ manufacturing related process”. The alloy used in the
design is chosen based on maximum strength required for stability, cost, time, availability and fabrication process.
All the above factors are essential to ensure that all design, manufacturing , and code requirements are compliant.
The alloy used for rim channels is either 6005-T5 or 6063-T5. The spacing of the rim ( distance between the tank shell andrim) usually varies
between 150-250 mm.
API-650 , APPENDIX-H specifies criteria fort he vapour-tight rim and their orientation requirements.

RESULT : ACCEPTABLE
As mentioned earlier in Section 1-A, ATECO Tank Co. adopts a conservative approach while calculating venting requirements for AIFR. Even
though API Standard 2000 does not apply to internal floating roofs, ATECO TANK CO.Stil adopts a methodology that considers factors from this
code.
The quantity of vents is dependent on factors such as Weight of the roof & flow rates.
