Classroom Blog and Website Creation Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Data Sharing in Projects

Content Area: Statistics
Grade Level(s): 11th and 12th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: Data are gathered, displayed, summarized, examined, and interpreted to
discover patterns and deviations from patterns. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS.ID.B.5 Recognize possible
associations and trends in the data.

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor - Students critically curate a variety of resources
using digital tools to construct knowledge and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and
others.

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Blog ☐ Wiki ☐ Other: Website Creation Tool (list): Weebly

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): http://www.weebly.com

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☒ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Weebly is designed to suit those with learning disabilities and special
education needs. It is a web-based tool and can be accessed and used by students with various learning
needs. It can be used in a group or individually.

Lesson idea implementation: Students will perform statistics experiments and gather data over several
weeks. Their project is to gather data, post it in their blog, compare information with their group members,
and then analyze their group’s results at the end of the two weeks. The group will plant a seed and monitor
the growth after it sprouts. Measurements are recorded on the student’s blog. If the student does not have
access to a computer, this can be done at school or by email within the group. After the second week, then
the students will come together and pool their data. The purpose of the blog is to have the student’s monitor
each other’s data and ask how their seed growth is progressing. It also serves as a reminder to each student
to take measurements.

Importance of technology: The teacher will need to be included on bi-weekly updates and included as a
follower. Students should use their first names and have parental permission to use Internet technology. If
website technology is not available, then email between the students is allowed. A GroupMe session can be
set up and used.

Inspiration (optional): Edublog website - https://edublogs.org/ gives some good ideas for teachers.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Parents should give written consent for their students. Students should
have a signed policy that they have reviewed with their parents and teacher in class on privacy and copyright
laws. Last names should not be used.

Reflective Practice: I have seen blogging used in classes with some success and some failure. It works in
academic classes like Psychology and English. I saw this fail in an Art class with a huge disaster. I have not
used this approach, yet. Nor, have I seen another math or science teacher use this. I will have to test this out
to see how it works with mathematics. This could be a new approach to finally getting my students to journal
their data on a long-term data gathering project. I think I will be the very, brave Guinea pig.
