EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WHETHER BY STATUTE, COMMON LAW, CUSTOM, USAGE OR OTHERWISE AS TO ANY
OTHER MATTERS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO NON-INFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS,
INTEGRATION, SATISFACTORY QUALITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE. The provisions of this section
7 shall survive the termination of this Agreement, howsoever caused, but this shall not imply or create any continued right to Use the
Software after termination of this Agreement.

8. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. IN NO EVENT WILL FITEL OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY
DAMAGES, CLAIMS OR COSTS WHATSOEVER OR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL DAMAGES, OR
ANY LOST PROFITS OR LOST SAVINGS, EVEN IF A FITEL REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE
POSSIBILITY OF SUCH LOSS, DAMAGES, CLAIMS OR COSTS OR FOR ANY CLAIM BY ANY THIRD PARTY. THE
FOREGOING LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS APPLY TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW IN YOUR
JURISDICTION. FITEL'S AGGREGATE LIABILITY AND THAT OF ITS SUPPLIERS UNDER OR IN CONNECTION WITH
THIS AGREEMENT SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT PAID FOR THE SOFTWARE, IF ANY. Nothing contained in this
Agreement limits FITEL 's liability to you in the event of death or personal injury resulting from FITEL 's negligence or for the tort of

application of which is expressly excluded.
11. General Provisions. If any part of this Agreement is found void and unenforceable, it will not affect the validity of the balance of
the Agreement, which shall remain valid and enforceable according to its terms. This Agreement shall not prejudice the statutory
rights of any party dealing as a consumer. This Agreement may only be modified by a writing signed by an authorized officer of
Adobe. Updates may be licensed to you by Adobe with additional or different terms. This is the entire agreement between Adobe and
you relating to the Software and it supersedes any prior representations, discussions, undertakings, communications or advertising

authorized representative, you will within thirty (30) days fully document and certify that use of any and all OFS FITEL Software at
the time of the request is in conformity with your valid licenses from OFS FITEL.

14. SPECIFIC EXCEPTIONS.

Software ("Pre-release Software"), then the following Section applies. To the extent that any provision in this Section is in conflict
with any other term or condition in this Agreement, this Section shall supercede such other term(s) and condition(s) with respect to the
Pre-release Software, but only to the extent necessary to resolve the conflict. You acknowledge that the Software is a pre-release
version, does not represent final product from OFS FITEL, and may contain bugs, errors and other problems that could cause system
or other failures and data loss. Consequently, the Pre-release Software is provided to you "AS-IS", and OFS FITEL disclaims any
warranty or liability obligations to you of any kind. WHERE LEGALLY LIABILITY CANNOT BE EXCLUDED FOR PRE-
RELEASE SOFTWARE, BUT IT MAY BE LIMITED, OFS FITEL 'S LIABILITY AND THAT OF ITS SUPPLIERS SHALL BE
LIMITED TO THE SUM OF FIFTY DOLLARS (U.S. $50) IN TOTAL. You acknowledge that FITEL has not promised or
guaranteed to you that Pre-release Software will be announced or made available to anyone in the future, that OFS FITEL has no
express or implied obligation to you to announce or introduce the Pre-release Software and that OFS FITEL may not introduce a
product similar to or compatible with the Pre-release Software. Accordingly, you acknowledge that any research or development that
you perform regarding the Pre-release Software or any product associated with the Pre-release Software is done entirely at your own
risk. During the term of this Agreement, if requested by OFS FITEL, you will provide feedback to OFS FITEL regarding testing and
use of the Pre-release Software, including error or bug reports. If you have been provided the Pre-release Software pursuant to a
separate written agreement, such as the OFS FITEL LLC Serial Agreement for Unreleased Products, your use of the Software is also
governed by such agreement. You agree that you may not and certify that you will not sublicense, lease, loan, rent, or transfer the Pre-
release Software. Upon receipt of a later unreleased version of the Pre-release Software or release by Adobe of a publicly released
commercial version of the Software, whether as a stand-alone product or as part of a larger product, you agree to return or destroy all
earlier Pre-release Software received from OFS FITEL and to abide by the terms of the End User License Agreement for any such
later versions of the Pre-release Software. Notwithstanding anything in this Section to the contrary, if you are located outside the
United States of America, you agree that you will return or destroy all unreleased versions of the Pre-release Software within thirty

3 QUICK START GUIDE
Splicer Connection
There are two basic methods for connecting a splicer to the computer and ultimately the
SMARTFUSE program. The first is through a serial port and the second is through
a USB connection. Different splicers have different types of connection methods
depending on the model. The older model splicers use a serial connection, but the new
models normally use USB connection. It is possible to use a Serial-to-USB device for
connection to the computer for the older splicers, but you will still select the serial option.

1. Start by entering network setup.

2. Once the network setup page has initialized enter the appropriate information at
the top of the screen and ADD the splicer to the list. See network setup section
for more detail.
3. Close the window and the splicer will be initialized and begin downloading
splicer data and other information. You should see your splicer listed in the table
and it should be active. If not, check the serial number and make the necessary
corrections.
4. Now you are free to use the other tools SMARTFUSE offers.
4 USER MANUAL
4.1 Main Screen Overview
The main screen is divided into different parts. There is the menu system which allows
the user to select the task they wish to accomplish by clicking on the standard windows
menu type system. Then there are the button screen options which allow the user to click
on the button of their choice to activate the correct utility.

There are different views which show different screens depending on the needs of the
user. The user can move the mouse over one of six different options to activate the
screen and cause it to change. As the mouse moves over the blue light it will change to
yellow and activate the screen. The current options are Main, Production, Splicer
Settings, Recipe, Optimization, and Utilities. The main screen, seen in the figure above,
is the default screen when the program is launched and shows what and how many
splicers are connected to SMARTFUSE. The other screens are shown in the
various sections below as each is discussed in more detail.
4.2 Splicer Communication Setup
4.2.1 Launching the Setup
The splicer must be connected to the computer before launching the program, especially
if you using the newer splicers with USB integrated into them. Launch
SMARTFUSE and the “Network Setup” screen to begin the process of connecting
to the splicer. To enter the splicer communication setup, follow the procedure below:
1. Move the mouse over the “Splicer Settings” button. There is no need to click it
just move the mouse close to this button and it will highlight and the screen will
change to the one in the figure below.
2. Now move the mouse to the “Network Setup” button and click it. This will
launch the network setup screen.

4.2.2 Network Setup screen

Below is the screen for managing the different splicers that you are connecting to your
computer. You can ADD, EDIT and DELETE splicers from your configuration.
4.2.3 Adding a new splicer
Adding splicer to your computer is a very simple task. Below is a list of steps to take in
order to accomplish this goal.
1. Enter the information along the top of the screen.
• Serial Number: Enter the serial number of the splicer that you want to
connect to. Note: This serial number should be listed on the manufactures tag
and the identical number should be in the splicers configuration screen. In
some cases the serial number may have been erased from the splicer and has
resorted back to the default value of “0”. If this is the case it is best to
change the number on the splicer before connecting it to the splicer.
• Splicer Name: Enter a name that you would like to refer to this splicer as.
This will be the name used to reference the splicer in different parts of the
program and is just an easy reference for the user to refer to that splicer.
• Computer Name: should be left as the default for the computer where the
splicer is connected. In some cases it is possible to have a central database
where all the splicers can connect and send their data, but this is an advanced
option.
• Splicer Model: Select the model of the splicer that the system is being
connected to. This allows the software to know how to communicate with the
splicer since each splicer model is slightly different.
• Communication Method: Select the method of communication for the
splicer this could be USB (S183 only) / Serial –RS232 (S175, S176, S177,
S199, S122, S183 II and S184) / Ethernet (S183, S183 II and S184). Based on
your selection the Port / IP Address will change to meet your needs.
• Port / IP Address: This tells the software thru which hardware it needs to
communicate. Typical connections use serial communication, even the USB
based splicers use a serial driver so they appear as a “COM” port to the
software.
2. Click the Add/Save button to enter the information to the table and allow the
software to connect and control the splicer.

4.2.4 Deleting a Splicer

Deleting an existing splicer is very easy, just follow the steps below:
1. Select the splicer for deletion by clicking on it in the table. The entire row should
be highlighted.
2. Click the “Delete” button and the splicer will disappear from the list.

4.2.5 Editing a Splicer

1. Edit the splicer by clicking on the splicer from the table. This will high light the
entire row
2. Click edit to send the information up to the various entry boxes at the top of the
screen.
3. Make changes as needed, noting that some items can not be changed like serial
number. This is done because there is other information saved in the database
that can not be altered. If needed you can delete the splicer and read the splicer,
but information that was gathered using the original settings will not be grouped
with this new splicer.
4. Click the “Add/Save” button to store the results and update the table.

4.2.6 Active Status

Active status lets the software know whether it should be looking for a splicer on a
particular port. It also allows the selection of different splicers on a single port. You can
make a splicer active and then connect to it on COM1 and then later turn active status off
and connect a different splicer to the same COM1 port.

Note: please turn the “Active Status” to “no”, if machine is not connected to the PC.
Otherwise, it may cause confusion in the communication process and result in
malfunction for certain features.
4.3 Recipe
The recipe section contains utility programs for manipulating the splicer recipes on the
splicer or for storing them for use in uploading to other splicers. There are 5 utilities that
deal with recipes and one utility for splicer direct control. The main recipe programs are:
• Program Editor – allows the user edit a program from the splicer or from a
recipe file.
• Program Upload – uploads recipe files from the computer to the splicer(s).
• Program Download – transfers programs from the splicer to the computer and
stores them in a recipe file for manipulation and re-upload.
• Program Comparison – compares the differences in programs from stored file to
splicers.
• Backup and Restore – allows the user to upload a range on programs from the
splicer to PC or to restore all those files back to the splicer. This is a good way to
preserve the splicer programs (e.g. firmware update process) or to replicate the
programs to multiple splicers.
4.3.1 Program Editor
This utility seen in the screen below allows the user to edit a live splicer program and
make changes to it or edit recipes offline for later testing.

There are a couple of methods for retrieving a recipe. The first is to open a recipe file
from disk and the second is to download a recipe file from a splicer. Both methods are
outlined below.

OPEN FILE button allows the user to open a recipe file from the computer hard disk.
Perform this action by doing the following:
1. Click the “Open File” button
2. File dialog box will appear
3. Browse to the location of the file and select it
4. Click “Open” and the recipe will be displayed in the table
DOWNLOAD RECIPE button downloads a recipe from the splicer. Follow the
procedure below in order to download the program of interest:
1. Click the “Download Recipe” button
2. Splicer window will appear with selection information
3. Select the splicer you want to download from, assuming there is more then one.
If there is only one it will already be selected.
4. Select the recipe program type, typically FUS for fusion recipes
5. Then select the recipe number or name of interest
6. Once you click OK the system will begin download the recipe into the table
EDITING the RECIPE is a quick and easy process, just follow these steps
1. Select the parameter you want to change from the Recipe table
2. The value will appear in the “Edit Value” entry control.
3. Make the change you want to the value in “Edit Value”
4. The table will update to that value.

Once you are done making the changes that you want with the recipe you can upload it
back to the splicer or save it to a file. Both of these steps are fairly simple, but both
require that you enter correct information in the MODE and COMMENT fields. The
MODE field requires a 4 character for the left fiber and a 4 character for the right
character and is separated by a colon “:”. The COMMENT uses up to a 16 character field
length for both left and right fibers.

SAVE AS … is the method used for saving the recipe back to the same file it came from
or you can rename the file to anything you wish to use as a reference for that recipe.
Update Splier button is used to upload the entire recipe to the location you specify using
the Recipe Destination entry. This number is related to the program number in the
splicer. Program number “0” will write the information to the active recipe on the
splicer, but if you change recipes this will be overwritten by the new recipe you
downloaded. Location “0” is for making changes and testing, but if you want to save the
recipe it either needs to be saved to a recipe number from 1 up to the maximum recipes
(150) for the splicer or to a file on the computer.

Note: If you do not want to replace old recipe with the new recipe in the same program
number, please enter a new recipe destination number before you update it.

4.3.2 PROGRAM UPLOAD

This utility is used to send recipes from the computer to the splicer. Below is a screen
shot of this window and a brief outline of how to use this utility is described.
There are a few basic steps to using this utility and below is the correct method for
uploading your recipes to the splicer.
1. Start by selecting the splicer to upload the recipes too. This control maybe grayed
out indicating that you only have one splicer attached and it is already selected. If
you have more then one splicer connected to your computer then you would need
to choose the correct splicer.
2. Click “Select File” button and a file dialog will appear. Simply browse to the file
you wish to upload and select it.
3. Next enter the “Recipe Destination”. This is where you wish to put the recipe file
on the splicer. The default is “0”, which is the current active recipe. Choose
another number to store it in a different location.
4. Once all these items have been completed click the “ADD” button to add it to the
table. From here you can add multiple recipes to multiple destinations and
splicers. At this point, the Status is “waiting” for further action.
5. Before actually uploading to the splicer you can delete lines from the table if a
mistake was made and you wish to remove one of them. This is done by selecting
the line in the table and clicking the “DELETE LINE” button.
6. The final step is to begin the upload process. This is done by clicking the
“UPLOAD” button. Once you click this button the system will begin to upload
the recipes to the splicer and give you a STATUS indicator in the table when it is
complete and if it completed with “Success” or “Failure”.
You can continue to add more recipes to the table and leave the current Successes in the
table. The utility knows to skip the ones it has already completed.

4.3.3 PROGRAM DOWNLOAD

The program download utility is the program you would use to take recipe files off the
splicer and store them to the computer. This will enable you to replicate these recipes to
other splicers or just to retain as a backup. The figure below is a screen shot of this
utility.
This utility is a little more interactive with the splicer in gathering data to prepare for the
upload process. Follow the steps outlined below for quick use of this utility.
1. Choose Splicer – choose the splicer you want to download from if you have more
then one connected to the computer.
2. Recipe Type – select the type of recipe, this maybe Fusion, Heater or some other
type. Once selected the utility will begin to download the recipe names from the
splicer. If the program has already downloaded these then it will give you the
option to use its memory or to re-download again. As long as you have not made
changes to the recipe list there is no need to re-download these names and this
will make the process much quicker.
3. Recipe – select the recipe program that you wish to download off the splicer.
4. Click “ADD” to add this recipe to the table of waiting recipes.
5. Repeat 1-4 or just 3-4 as needed for additional downloads.
6. If you added something to the table you wish to remove before downloading
simply select it in the table and click “DELETE LINE” and it will be removed.
7. After all of the above is completed you are ready to begin downloading the
selected recipes. Simply click the “DOWNLOAD” button and the process will
begin. After each recipe is downloaded the user is prompted for a file name to be
entered for the currently downloaded recipe. Enter the name and click SAVE to
continue to the next recipe.
Once all the recipes are downloaded you can begin to add more to the list and
DOWNLOAD again. The recipes already in the table that have already been downloaded
will not be re-downloaded again. If you do not have anything to download, you can just
simply move to another action by clicking”x” in the upper right corner.

4.3.4 PROGRAM COMPARISON

The comparison utility is a great utility for determining the differences between recipes
on different splicers or on different recipe numbers or on disk and even any combination
of these. The first recipe entered is the reference for all other recipes that are loaded.
Keep this in mind when choosing the recipes to compare. Follow the steps below for
quick use of this utility.
When this utility is first launched the table is empty and most of the entry items are
invisible. However, as you add recipes you will see the table looking like the above. The
highlighted yellow items are where the second recipe (2nd column) does not match with
the first. This is the method that this utility uses to indicate deviations from the base
recipe.
To load recipes into the table you must first.
1. Select the Method – options are IMPORT FROM FILE or PROGRAM FROM
SPLICER
2. If from file a dialog will appear and you will be asked to select the recipe file. If
from Splicer is selected you will be asked: Which Splicer, Recipe Type and
Recipe number. Once all these are selected the program will be downloaded from
the splicer and added to the table.
3. Repeat Steps 1-2 as many times as needed to add additional recipes to the table
for comparison.
You can save the table contents to a spreadsheet file by choosing the menu option File >
Save Table. You can also choose to clear the contents of the table and start again. This
is done by selecting the menu option File > Clear Table. The following is a screen shot
for this feature.

4.3.5 BACKUP and RESTORE

This routine allows the user to backup all the programs from a splicer or restore all the
programs to a splicer. This is an ideal method of duplicating all the programs from one
splicer to another splicer or just as a backup to the splicer in case a program is deleted or
changed. Below is a figure of this utility.
BACKUP
1. Choose the splicer from which to backup if more than one is connected
2. Select the beginning recipe number and ending recipe number.
3. Select a Title for these recipes. This will be a name used to save each file to the
computer. The format of the file is “Recipe Number-Title.txt”. The files are
stored in the model folder name and a backup folder with series number as ID.
For example if the splicer is a S177, then the location for the files will be
C:\Program Files\SmartFuse 5\Splicer Programs\S177\5130\BACKUP-20091005.
The backup folder uses a date and time stamp to log these files to, so you will
know when it was recorded.
4. Click “Begin Backup” to start the automatic process. This will take some time for
all the programs to be downloaded.
RESTORE
1. Select the restore tab.
2. Click the “Begin Restore” button. A file dialog will activate asking for the
location of the files to restore. Path to the correct location and then click “Current
Folder” to select the folder where the files are located.
The system uses the recipe numbers for reloading to the splicer, but you can manually
change these if you want to rearrange them differently then they were taken off the
splicer.
4.3.6 MANUAL MODE
This utility simply displays a keyboard for the splicer selected, so that the user can push
buttons on the computer instead of on the splicer. It is a handy feature if you wish to
control the splicer remotely and it is located in a place not close to the computer. Each
splicer model has a somewhat different keyboard layout and therefore a different layout
is displayed for each splicer model selected.

This utility can be opened from the main screen and left open to use in any of the sub
utilities. However, if you are in the middle of downloading or uploading information
from the splicer you should refrain from clicking buttons on this keyboard as it will
interfere with these processes.

There is also an option on this screen to open a video display window. This option will
only work if you have a video to USB converter and the splicer has the video output
option to plug it into (S175, S176, S199 and S183).
4.4 Optimization
The optimization utilities are designed to aid in producing better splices by helping to
make quick parameter changes and testing or by measuring results using external
equipment. The figure below show the program button options for these types of
programs. Some of these are:
• Live Splicing – Designed to optimize loss and attenuation using external
measurement devices.
• Optimization – A utility where the user can create unique procedures or scripts
for moving the fiber around until optimization occurs and then a splice can be
performed.
• OTDR – Through a optical switch, this feature can measure a bi-directional loss
then record it to a result table.
• Arc and Movement Patterns – Utility for displaying graphically what the splicer
is doing as it splices with different arc powers and movements.
• Motor Movement – Used to aid in moving the fiber around until a good loss is
obtained using external measurement tools by manual control of the motors. This
feature can also allow the user to execute the splicing action.
4.4.1 LIVE SPLICING
This routine as mentioned above is mainly for optimization splicing. It works by using
an external measurement device such as a Power meter or ER meter. Follow the
procedure below for beginning your splice and note the special items to be aware of when
using this feature.

When you first launch this utility you will be prompted to select an instrument to use as
your measurement device. Select it and the method of communication for the device. If
your device is not listed please contact Fitel and more information can be given on how
to create your own instrument file. You can choose the manual method that allows you
to read the instrument and enter the measured value when prompted to do so.

Start the Live Splicing process by using the following procedure:

1. Selecting the Splicer to use if more than one is connected to the computer.
2. Change the recipe file to the one you want to use by using the splicer or by
clicking the “Change Program” button.
3. If you need to edit the current program you can do so by clicking on the “Edit
Program” button and launching the program editor.
4. Select the mode from which you want to perform the Attenuation, or normal or
user depended additional arc.
5. Then enter in or measure the following information:
• Reference Value – This value is entered in by the user (if choosing
manual entry option) or can be obtained from measurement device by
clicking the “SET” button (if choosing any specific power meter).
This value is what the optimum loss of the system is before the fiber is
broken and re-spliced.
• Wavelength – This is typed into the system and sent to the instrument
when the “SET” button is pressed.
• Splicer Loss – This is the target loss for the system to achieve and is
entered in by the user
• Upper Limit – This is the maximum value the loss can achieve before
stopping the routine. For example if after the first splice the measured
valve is much bigger then it should be the system will automatically
stop and it knows that no matter how many more arcs to be discharged
it will never achieve a better splice.
• Tolerance – How close to the target “Splicer Loss” to get before
stopping the automatic re-arc of the program.
• Instrument Read Delay – time between the current arc and actual
reading of the data. This gives the system time to settle before the
reading.
6. Click the “START” button to begin the optimization routine.
7. If at any time you need to stop the process just click the “STOP” button.
The STATUS WINDOW keeps the user apprised of what the program is doing or what
stage in the process it is at. Every time an arc or re-arc is done then the information is
logged in the table and into a graph. The user has the option to select either viewing the
data in graphical form or tabular form by selecting the “Display Selection” pull down.
This table can be saved for later reference or cleared to start a new test.

4.4.2 OPTIMIZATION
The optimization routine gives the user the ability to write scripts and use them to try and
improve the alignment process. SMARTFUSE already has a few predefined scripts
developed to use and to use as a template for developing new scripts. The predefined
scripts are stored in the path: C:\Program Files\SmartFuse 5\Parameter Files\Alignment
Scripts
Start the Optimization process by using the following procedure:
4. The next step is to select the instrument to use for measuring by clicking the
“Choose Instrument” button. This will bring up a file dialog box in which to
select an instrument file. Once it is load the instrument will be initialized.
5. After this select a script file by clicking the “Choose Script” button. This will
bring up a file dialog box in which to path to a script file.
6. Set up a reference value, as mentioned in 4.4.1.5.
7. Start the alignment simply by clicking the “Start Alignment” button. When the
green light appears the process is complete and the alignment script has
completed.
8. If the results are satisfactory, press the “Splicer Execution” to make splice. If not,
modifying the script and repeat the 7.

There are two tables in the lower section of the screen. One displays the information
from the alignment process and is updated when ever a measurement is made. The other
table displays the values of the internal variables. This table is helpful in correcting script
issues and for monitoring the alignment process.
Note: See details on how to create a script file in the appendix.

Add comments about SET buttons – need to review for more info on these items.

4.4.3 OTDR (under development)

User can set up OTDR through an optical switch. This feature can measure a bi-
directional loss then record it to a result table.

1. Selecting the Splicer to use if more than one is connected to the computer.
2. Click the configuration to pull the measurement script
3. Press “Splice Fiber” to execute the splicing process.
4. Click the “Begin Auto” to do bi-directional loss measurement.
5. Loss results will be shown on the table.

4.4.4 ARC and MOVEMENT PATTERNS

The ARC and Movement patterns utility allows the user to visually see how the arc and
motors will move when the splice occurs. The user can make changes to the parameters
and see how it will affect the arc and motors.

There are three parts to this utility:

• The first part is the top section where the recipe parameters are graphically
displayed. Selection of the “Arc Type” and the different “Waveform Type”.
• The second part is the Splicer interface where the user can upload the new
parameters to the splicer for testing or to change the active program on the splicer
• The last part is the parameter table and editor. The user can select a parameter
and edit the value.

This utility does not necessarily need to be connected to a splicer to edit the parameters
and see the graphical representation of the results. Start the process by opening or
downloading a recipe.

OPEN/LOAD a recipe file

1. In order to do this select the file menu “File > Open”
2. A window will appear asking where to load program from: FILE or SPLICER
3. Once selected either a File dialog box will appear asking for the location of a
recipe file or if splicer was selected then the user must select the Splicer, Program
Type and then the Program/Recipe to be read.
4. After this is done the program parameters will be loaded into the table and the
graph will be updated with the new parameter values.

EDIT the Parameters

1. Select the parameter for edit by clicking the row in the table
2. The value for the parameter is updated in the “Edit Value” entry box.
3. Change this value to the value you wish and the parameter is updated in the table.

Once the changes are made to the recipe you will want to make sure that it is saved. This
is done by selecting the menu File > Save Program to... > File or Splicer. Selecting
either will store the program in a location where it can be reloaded later.

4.4.5 MOTOR MOVEMENT

The motor movement utility gives the user the ability to adjust the motors and make
movements that improve alignment. It is mainly for the experimentation in ways to
quickly improve splicing when specially shaped fiber is being used.

Make motor movements by clicking the button associated with the motor you wish to
move. Make sure you set the number of STEPS and the SPEED that you wish the motor
to move.
• HOME and OVER buttons are used by clicking one of these buttons and then the
button for the stage you want to move. Once you click the stage button the motor
will either move to the home switch or the over switch depending on the button
you selected.
• ARC fuse and ARC Re-fuse buttons are for convenience in having the splicer
automatically perform the splice from the same screen.
• HOME ALL will reset all the motors to their home location.
• MOVE TABLE logs the movements that you make so that you can go back and
review what movements you made.
4.5 Utilities
The UTILITES screen seen in the figure below shows various functions that are available
for performing such features as: Machine Status, Result History, Arc History, Image
Capture and Brightness Capture.

4.5.1 Machine Status

This utility is designed to give the user the ability to upload and download the splicer’s
machine parameters. Once in this utility simply follow the steps below:
1. Choose your Splicer from the pull down menu.
2. Select the type of machine parameter. On most splicers there are only two
selections: CON (Configuration) and MOT (Motor Parameters).
3. Pick either to upload or download the parameters. You can download the
parameters and save them to a file, but to upload the parameters back to the
splicer you must enter the PASSWORD. The password is “Fitel”.
4. The next step can be different depending on the transfer selection that was
selected.
a. Downloading - then click the “DOWNLOAD” button.
b. Uploading - then click the “IMPORT” button to select the file to restore to
the splicer.
5. The final step is also different based on whether you selected upload or download.
a. Download – You can view the parameters in the table and click the
“EXPORT” button to store them in a text file for later recalling.
b. Upload– Simply click the “UPLOAD” button to begin sending the
parameters to the splicer.
At any time you can load the
parameters from the splicer or the file
for manually viewing. There is no
need to UPLOAD or DOWNLOAD
unless there is a problem with a
firmware upgrade or you made
changes manually that needs to be
corrected.

NOTE: The firmware upgrade utility

makes copies of these parameters
before the firmware upgrade occurs.
The software for the back-up also
makes a copy when you first connect
the splicer for the first time.

4.5.2 Result History

The result history utility, seen in the figure, gives the user the ability to download all the
results from the splicer and save them to a spreadsheet file (CSV format). Simply select
the splicer if it has not already been selected and then click “Begin Download”. Once the
process begins and the results start transferring the table will automatically begin to fill
up. Also, a progress bar will appear showing how much of the process has been
completed. This will continue until all
results have been downloaded. Once it
has completed select File >Save
History from the file menu. A dialog
box will appear asking for a file name
to save the table to.

NOTE: The software automatically

downloads the results when it is
connect to the program. These results
are stored in a database that can be
accessed via the Statistical Viewer.
There is a setting in the file menu
Help->Options to disable this feature.
4.5.3 Arc History
The Arc History routine is very similar to the Result History screen. It is designed to
download the arc history data from the splicer and store it in a spreadsheet file (CSV
format). Simply select the splicer if it
has not already been selected and then
click “Begin Download”. Once the
process begins and the arc check
history starts transferring the table will
automatically begin to fill up. Also, a
progress bar will appear showing how
much of the process has been
completed. This will continue until all
history has been downloaded. Once it
has completed select File >Save
History from the file menu. A dialog
box will appear asking for a file name
to save the table to.

4.5.4 Image Capture

The image capture utility is dedicated to downloading the images that are stored on the
splicer or the active view of the cameras. There are two utilities to select from when
entering this function. The user will be prompted to select which utility they wish to use.

Here are the features of each utility to help in deciding which to use.
Image Capture (Current Image)
• Captures current image from the Splicer.
• Used only for the older splicers that don’t have an image history function.
• Takes a long time to download full image.
Image History
• Downloads a picture from the splicer that was stored to the history.
• Only available on newer splicers like S122, S177, S183, S183II and S184.
• Image is smaller, so the download is faster.
4.5.4.1 Image Capture
This feature as described above is for downloading current images from the splicer. To
use this utility follow these steps.
1. Select Splicer, if not already selected.
2. Freeze Image – this is done to lock in the current image to the splicer buffer. Not
all splicers require this function, but those that do will perform this action. It will
also ask you to select the image you wish to freeze. Some of these options maybe
X or Y cameras.
3. Click the “Begin Download”
button to start the process. A
progress bar is shown to help
determine when the process
will be complete. The image
will be updated on the picture
control and once the process
competes the 3D graph will be
updated too. The 3D graph
will allow you to rotate the
image around, so that you can
see different aspects of the
image in a 3D view.
4. Wait and Wait and Wait.
5. Save Date- This function will save the data to a spreadsheet format file where you
could load it into Excel for graphing different areas of the splice.

4.5.4.2 Image History

This feature as described above is for downloading images that are already saved to the
image history of the splicer. To use this utility follow these steps.
1. Select Splicer, if not already
selected.
2. Select the image location of
where the image history file is
located. This is a number that
correlates to the number in the
history folder of where the
image resides.
3. Click “Download” button to
begin the process.
4. The picture box will update as
the image is received and the
“Downloading” LED will turn
off when the process
completes.
5. After the image is fully downloaded a file dialog box will appear asking for the
file name and location of where the file image can be stored.
4.5.5 Brightness Capture
The brightness data capture is a sub set of the image capture routine in that it only
downloads a single slice of the current image on the splicer. This is a vertical slice of the
data from top to bottom. This gives
the user a profile of the fiber being
joined and aids in development of new
splicing algorithms for splicing unique
type fibers. This utility only works on
new splicers like the S183II and S184.
Other splicers do not have the ability
to take vertical slices of the image, but
Fitel is working on adding these
commands to a few older style splicers
and may be available as a firmware
download. Follow the procedures
below for collecting and storing data
with this utility.

Use the 3D graph to view the data

from different angles and see the profile of your data. This is done by using the mouse
and left-clicking on the graph. Hold the button down and move the mouse to the left or
right and up or down. It takes a little practice with the graph to get used to it.

Single Capture
1. Select the Splicer if not already selected.
2. Choose “Single Capture” for a single image column.
3. Select the line number (512 is in the center for both S183II and S184) or column
number for the image. Refer to the splicer manual to determine the number of
columns in the image and where you want the cross section to be.
4. Select if you want the X or Y image.
5. Click “START” to begin the download. It will take a few seconds to complete the
download. The LED will turn ON and OFF when the process has started and
completed, respectfully.
6. At this point you can:
a. Save the data using the “SAVE” button
b. Choose another line to download by changing the line number and
clicking START again
c. “CLEAR” to clear the table and start again.

Auto Rotation Capture

1. Select the Splicer if not already selected.
2. Choose “Auto Rotation” for a single image column.
3. Select the line number or column number for the image. Refer to the splicer
manual to determine the number of columns in the image and where you want the
cross section to be.
4. Select if you want the X or Y image.
5. Enter the Rotation Number to START and END with (range from 100 to 2700).
This is not in degrees, but in units that correlate to the index of the encoder on the
splicer (10=1 degree). It may take some trial and error to find the correct rotation
counts. You may also wish to contact Fitel for an answer to the new splicers that
come out with this capability.
6. Click “START” to begin the download. The system will start rotating to START
point and then sample the data, then move to the next and sample the data. This
will repeat until the process reaches the last point. The LED will turn ON and
OFF each time it is downloading a sample. When the process has stopped the
“START” button will be back in its correct position.
7. At this point you can:
a. Save the data using the “SAVE” button
b. “CLEAR” to clear the table and start again.

NOTE: If you need to stop the process before the process completes, just click the
“START” button. Only click it once and after it completes its current process it will stop.
If you continue to click it, then it will restart the process again and you might jam the
machine.
4.6 Production
The production menu has some features that maybe useful in production activities
relating to splicers and performance. There are currently four applications that are
involved in this section. They are Production Display, Tutorial, Work Instruction and
Statistical Analysis.

4.6.1 Tutorial
The tutorial allows you to view video clips of basic operations of the splicing procedures.
These videos are located on the installation CD and can be manually copied to the hard
drive or just accessed directly from the CD. You can create your own videos of your
procedures and put them in the same folder as the ones from Fitel. This will give users
quick access to video instructions that maybe helpful in doing their job.

4.6.2 Work Instruction

The work instruction is a quick program that allows for reading PDF documents or other
types of documents that may give instruction to the operator. This program utilizes the
Microsoft Internet Explorer browser window to access files. The user simply browses to
the file storage of where the documents are stored to access them.
4.6.3 Production Display
This utility allows the user to select various tables and charts to monitor during the
production of splices. This screen gives an active history of splice data up to the current
time. New splice data may take up to a minute to register on the screen. All data is
logged to the database and is periodically polled. Below is a configuration window that
appears when you select Menu >Configure Screen.

There are four sections in which to display information. Configure one to four of these
sections as need be. Note that the more sections that are configured the smaller the
graphs and tables are. For example if you configure one graph then this graph takes up
the entire page and hence if you configure four sections then the graphs/tables take up a
quarter of the screen for each. Configure each section as follows:
1. This setup screen allows you to choose the display type: Line Graph, Histogram,
or Table.
2. Select splicer to read data from. Note that this list displays all splicers not just
active splicers.
3. Select the result type you wish to monitor. Hold control and click for multi
selections or Shift for a range of sections.
4. Select the number of points to display. It will display the last most recent data
points even if this was from the previous day.
5. Select process limits if you want to view these on your graph (for example, you
can set up a loss upper limit). If not set them both to zero (default)
6. If you want the legend to be displayed, simply check the box and this will appear.

4.6.4 Statistical Analysis

This routine allows the user to analyze collected result data from the database. The
database is where all result data is stored unless you have turned this feature off (from the
menu bar’s Help/Option). The figure below shows this screen. There are two tabs that
are used in this program: Configure Data and Analysis Result. The configure screen is
the one shown in the figure below and is the main screen for selecting the type of data
that is available. Below the figure is a list of instructions for accessing the information
and displaying it.

Configure Data
1. Begin by selecting the splicer(s) from which to pull data from. Use <SHIFT> to
select a continuous range and <CTRL> for selecting multiple non continuous
items.
2. Next select the mode from which to select the data. Use SHIFT and CONTROL
as above for multiple selections.
3. Select the result parameter from which to look at. Again use SHIFT and
CONTROL as above for multiple selections.
4. Select the date range to choose from. This can be a very large range to start with.
5. Click the “Update Time vs Quantity” plot. This will update the plot so that you
can see how many splices of that splicer, mode and result were found.
6. You can use the mouse to zoom in on a more specific range. Simply left-click
and hold the mouse button as you drag over the range you want to select. Then
release the mouse button. This will zoom in the graph to the area selected and
update your date range.
7. Last click the “Query Database” button to take you to the Analysis display page
this button actually polls the data base for all the information that you have
requested.

There are a number of methods for viewing the data: Line Chart, Histogram, Performance
Comparison, Pareto Chart, Time vs. Quantity and as a table. Simply select the view that
best suites your need. There are control limits that can be set to help in determining how
well the splicer is staying within its limits or %Yield.
4.7 Maintenance
The maintenance menu has some additional tools for helping to diagnose problems with
the connection or for upgrading the firmware on the splicer. These maintenance routines
include:
• Splicer COMM Log – Logs all the communication with the splicer(s).
• Terminal – Allows the user to communicate with the splicer directly by issuing
commands directly to it.
• Firmware Upgrade – Upgrades the firmware on the splicer and restores the CON
and MOT settings.
• Self-Check – Used on the newer splicers to store the self-check data.
• I/O Monitoring – This tool is handy on older splicers for direct control of some
of the input/outputs from the machine.

4.7.1 Firmware Upgrade

As mentioned above this routine aids in the installation of the firmware and the
restoration of the MOT and CON parameters after the firmware has been upgraded.
Below are some images and steps to take for performing this upgrade.

The screen above is the first step in the firmware process. Over the years there have been
improvements to the splicers and so
there is a program for upgrading older
splicers and a different program for
upgrading the newer splicers. This
screen selects between the two based
on your selection of the connected
splicer. Once the splicer is selected
then you can click “Begin Upgrade”.

The screen on the right will appear and

you will need to select a few items.
First you must browse to the location
of the files needed for upgrade. There
are two types of files available:
Application and Message. Each file
path must contain the correct one, but they both do not need to be selected. For example
if you are just upgrading the Application firmware then browse to the file and select it.
Once done you can just start upgrading this one firmware file.

Firmware Upgrade Procedure

1. Select Splicer if not already selected.
2. Click the “Begin Upgrade” button.
3. New window will appear as seen in the figure.
4. Select APPLICATION file (if needed)
5. Select MESSAGE file (if needed)
6. Click “START” button.
7. The process will begin to start. It is completely automated and it is important
that you do not press buttons on the splicer while it is performing its tasks.
There is a numeric indicator that shows in the window to let the user know how
much of the progress has been completed. Below is the process that the program
takes in upgrading the firmware.
a. Download and Save CON data
b. Download and Save MOT data
c. Erase sectors for application upgrade (if selected for upgrade)
d. Upload new application firmware (if selected for upgrade)
e. Erase sectors for message upgrade (if selected for upgrade)
f. Upload new message firmware (if selected for upgrade)
g. User is prompted for shutting down the splicer and restarting (make sure
you wait for the splicer to fully reboot before clicking the button to
continue.
h. System tries to reconnect to splicer.
i. Splicer is initialized.
j. User is prompted to use previous CON data or to select from a different
file (it is best to choose the default, the previous version).
k. User is prompted to use previous MOT data or to select from a different
file (it is best to choose the default, the previous version).
l. The process is complete.
8. The user is prompted that the process has been completed and returns the user to
the main screen.
Depending on the splicer this process can take any where from ten minutes to an hour to
complete. If you are upgrading both the Application and the Message firmware the
process will take longer.

Caution: There is an abort button and early on in the process you can use this button to
abort the firmware or if there is an issue where the splicer is locked and stops
communicating. Must of the time it is not necessary to click this button and should be
avoided as it can leave the splicer in a non-communicating status.

NOTE: If the parameters are not restored then there maybe a problem with the splicer
reestablishing communication. If this happens create a new splicer with a serial number
of “0” and reconnect to the splicer. Then use the machine status program to upload the
MOT and CON parameters that were downloaded earlier. There is a backup set of these
files in the event that those files are incomplete or corrupt.
5 Optimization Script Writing
The command structure will be a simple format and is seen below:

Command? Var1, Var2, Var3; Comment displayed

[Sub Routines]

Spaces can be used to separate different variables in a formula.

Commas will be used to separate different unrelated variables in the command structure.
Comments can be placed at the end of a command to display information to the user of
the script while it is running.
Commands and terms are not case sensitive. (Variable Xyz = XYZ = xyz)
Sub Routines must be inside brackets ([ ])

Let? Variable = Number

This command sets the internal variable equal to a number, the value of another variable
or to the result of a formula.

Examples:
Let? X=1
Let? X2 = 2.543
Let? X5 = X2 + 32

Wait? Number or Variable

This function delays the continuation of the script by this number in seconds.

Example:
Wait? 2 ;waits 2 seconds then moves to next command.
Wait? X2 ;waits the value of X2 in the buffer.

Jump? [Sub routine]

This command allows the operator to jump forward or backward in the script.

Example:
Jump? [TEST] ; Jumps to the location where [TEST] is found.

Instr? Var1, Var2

This command allows the user to call an instrument command and record the output if
there is one. Refer to the instrument commands list before using this function.

Example:
Instr? SETREF, X1 ;Sets and records the instrument reference.

Measure? Variable
Measures the selected instrument and records the result to the variable.
Example:
Measure? Ref
If the instrument read 0.05db then Ref = 0.05

Position? Motor1, Motor2, Motor3, etc.

Reads the position of the motors in the list and records them to the table.

Example:
Position? X-Fine Align, Y-Fine Align

Move? Motor, Distance, Speed

Allows the operator to move a motor the distance selected. You can control the speed
and distance for that positional move. Moves are incremental only and not absolute. The
move can also be to a predesigned location such as HOME or OVER.

Example:
Move? X-Fine Align, 200, M
Move? X-Fine Align, X2, M
Move? L-Clamp, OVER, L

Clad Align?
This command has the ability to read the clad offset for the X and Y axis from the splicer.
It will then move the X and Y axis to realign the clad. This movement is done by
inserting two “MOVE?” commands into the currently running script.

Example:
Clad Align?
Auto inserted: Move? X-Fine Align, 15, L
Auto inserted: Move? Y-Fine Align, 124, L

Brightness? Camera, Column #, Filter, Var1,

This function allows the operator to measure the brightness pattern for a particular line
column number specified by the variable. Setting the filter on will truncate the data to
remove the clad area. The camera can be either X or Y. It will also record the peak
location to the specified variable at the end of the statement

Example:
Brightness? X, 132, T, X2
Brightness? Y, X2, F, X3

If? Statement, Else

This command allows the user to make decisions in the program that affect how the
splicer should be aligning the fiber. Valid statement lines are (=, <, >)

Example:
If? X > X2, [Sub Routine]
This reads as: If X is greater then X2 then do the next line else go to [Sub Routine].

Stop?
This command should be at the end of the script and is used to set the user interface back
to normal and stop running of the script.
