Online Projects, Collaboration Sites, and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Template

Name: Bugs
Grade Level: 5th grade
Content Area: Science
Standards Addressed: S5L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to group
organisms using scientific classification procedures.
Title of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: BugScope
URL of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in
your classroom: Students will use this website after completing their unit learning about
scientific classifications. Students will explore different kinds of bugs, classify their bugs,
and then send the bugs in to BugScope. Students will write a paper based on their bug
hypothesis and the information they get back about their bugs.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a
classroom? Computers with internet access.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them
may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often
beyond their school: Students are able to learn about bugs via experts over a live
chat.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or
producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): Students are
classifying their bugs based on their own observations.
c. Higher-order thinking: Students will classify their bugs based on information and
knowledge they have obtained throughout the science unit and compare it to the
information they receive from BugScope.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their
product: Students will place their finished work in their student science notebook.

What Level of Technology Implementation best describes this learning activity and Why?
BugScope is at a LoTi level 5. Students are able to use technology to connect them to the real
world and apply higher-order thinking skills.
How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with your district’s
Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies? This activity will be done in the classroom under
teacher supervision. Students will be allowed to attend the live chat after the parents and
administration have been notified about the activity and students bring back a signed permission
slip from the parents. All student identities will be kept anonymous.
