I. Overview

Read this service manual carefully before installation, debugging and operation of this ice machine.

This Service Manual gives an introduction of operation conditions, performance parameters, installation
and debugging and operating procedures of AF series ice machine. The ice making system is of vertical,
internal ice scraping type. The machine is equipped with P.C. board, which exercises monitoring over its
whole operation process, namely:

(1) Ice level

(2) Water level in water bin
(3) Normal operation of reducer’s electromotor
(4) Temperature of evaporation

In addition, the P.C. board will protect the machine when any abnormal condition arises and in the
meanwhile, an alert indicator lights up to indicate the cause of stoppage, thus facilitates the trouble
shooting and maintenance. If an optical device is used for ice level control, the optical sensor will signal
P.C. board to stop the machine when a beam of light sent by the optical device is sheltered by ice.
Meanwhile, a corresponding indicator on the front panel of machine lights up, indicating that the ice
storage bin has been full of ice.

Such kind of machine features advanced micro-processing system; practical operation shows it is more
precise and reliable than the electromechanical control system.

IV. Operating Program

1. Check before start

Inspection shall be carried out before start, and the check shall include the items listed below:

1) Whether power connection be safe and reliable or voltage in normal range or not;
2) Whether water pressure be within the specified range of 0.15-0.5MPa or not;
3) Whether the earth wire be securely connected or not;
4) Whether all fastening bolts have been tightened or not;
5) Whether freezing occurs on the interior of vaporizer and ice blade is stuck by ice or not.

2. Start

1) Open feed water valve and fill up the water bin, and the floating valve automatically closes when water
level reaches the spillover port.

2) During trial operation, mains air switch (K1) shall be turned to “ON”, then the power indicator on the
panel of electrical box lights up (see Figure 4). Switch on the Start/Stop switch on the electrical cabinet
to enable the ice-maker to enter a 5-minute-delay state (indicator of Start Delay blinks) which is
followed by the automatic start of gear box and water pump by the control system, and then the machine
goes into operation. Observation shall be conducted at this time to verify that (1) ice blade is rotating in
correct direction or the shaft and rotation is in normal status; (2) water dispensing pan is aligned with
the red mark and water-dispensing pipes have normal output. In case above-stated items are all in
normal operation, the Start/Stop switch shall be switched off to stop the ice machine.

3) Ice production stage: Start refrigeration system and open return air valve and Freon feed valve. When
Freon unit reaches a suction pressure of 0.07-0.09 MPa, the Start/Stop switch of ice machine shall be
switched on, which enables the ice machine to start ice production after a 5-minute delay.

3. Stop

When the Start/Stop switch is turned off, water pump and solenoid valve stop working immediately, and
the gear box stops working too after a 3-minute delay so as to remove the ice left on the interior of the
vaporization cylinder. Now the air switch shall not be turned off before speed reducer stops working.

Notes: Now please don’t close the refrigeration system immediately; you should close it after the
refrigerant in vaporizer is pumped out.

Instruction: A. When solenoid valve in normal service, it’s unnecessary to close manual Freon-
feeding valve;
B. In case ice machine was not in use for a short time (say, a few days), manual Freon-
feeding valve would be closed.
C. When ice machine was not in use for a long time, the refrigerant in vaporizer shall

6
be pumped out completely and be kept in ammonia storage bucket in refrigeration
system.

4. Stoppage due to alarm

1) Stoppage due to ice full level alarm (normal stop)

When microprocessor of computer’s main board detects full level of ice storage bin, the programmed
process of ice full level shall be implemented: water pump and solenoid valves stop first, and then gear
box motor stops after 1-minute delay and ice full level indicator turns on at the same time. Now the
system is in stand-by mode. After ice is discharged, the system automatically restore to normal
operating status: gear box motor, water pump and solenoid valve will be started in sequence.

2) Stoppage due to low water level alarm

When microprocessor of computer’s main board detects low level alarm of water storage bin, low water
level alarm program will be implemented: water pump and solenoid valves stop first, and then gear box
motor stops after 1-minute delay and low water level indicator turns on at the same time. The buzzerer
on the computer board gives alarm. Now the system is in stand-by mode. After the water bin is refilled,
and the micro-processor detects the normal water level. The system automatically restore to normal
operating status: gear box motor, water pump and solenoid valve will be started in sequence.

3) Stoppage due to low speed of gear box motor:

In case of operating condition, when microprocessor of computer’s main board detects suspension,
reversal, low speed of gear box motor, Low-speed fault processing program will be implemented: gear
box motor, water pump and solenoid valve stop working and give alarms simultaneously. Now causes of
such fault shall be identified and eliminated, and the system shall be turned on after alarm is reset.

7
4) High vaporize temperature alarm
After ice machine retains 10-minute operation, computer board’s microprocessor begins implementing
temperature detection program: when vaporization temperature exceeds a setpoint, the microprocessor
implement a Hi-temp fault processing program: water pump and solenoid valve stop immediately and gear
box stops after a 6-minute delay and gives alarm simultaneously. The machine shall be restarted after with
fault being reset.

※Other notes: This machine don’t configure condenser temperature sensor.

B. “Start/Stop” Switch

a. In normal condition, it functions to start or stop the machine.

b. In case the machine stops due to activation of alarm device, the cause of fault shall be identified and
eliminated before machine being restarted, and the off Start/Stop button shall be turned on (connected)
to enable the machine to restart, which serves as reset key.

C. “DIP” Switch: P.C. board is equipped with 8“DIP” switches, which shall not be adjusted willfully. In
normal operation, all other switches are set to OFF position except No.2、No.3、No.6 switch to ON
position, as shown in Figure 6 below.

8
Figure 5
There are 8 change-over switches on the P.C. board. The function of the first switch: if it is at "ON"
position (the upper position), there will be no 5 minutes' of delay status after start-up; if it is at "OFF"
position (the lower position), there will be a 5 minutes' of delay status after the start-up. The switch is
required to be set at "OFF" position (the lower position) when the machine leaves the factory or operates
normally. The function of the second and third switch: select the ice full sensor. Select granular ice
machine’s ice-full sensor when the second and third switch dial OFF. In contrast, select flake ice machine’s
ice-full sensor when the second and third switch dial ON. The function of the fourth switch: select the
speed of the reducer motor. The function of the fifth switch: select the positive rotation or reverse rotation
of the reducer motor. The sixth switch is a buzzer switch. If it is at “On” position (the upper position), there
will be buzz for warning; if it is at “Off” position (the lower position), there will be no buzz for warning .
The function of the seventh switch: invalid. The function of the eighth switch: select the test parameter
measurement. (see figure 6).

9
5. The additive function of the electronical control of the flake ice machine

1) Avoiding the ice blade to be frozen by evaporator set it to auto-running situation depends on Time

Relay, when the machine stop running. Under the control of relay, when the machine stopping (run/stop

key switch to stop position), ice blade will run by itself every 1 hour. Default setting: ice blade running

2 minutes every 1 hour, then turning off by itself. That cycle is repeating. Machine running can be

controlled by process switch to the observation hole. When observation hold cover open, the process

disconnecting, and the machine stop running.

2) Default setting: Time relay “KT2” 2 minutes, Time Relay“ KT3” 1 hour.

Attention: Factory settings of Time Relay done, please not to be changed without permission.

3) Precaution:
Do not open the observation hold cover when the ice machine is running well,if the observation hold

cover has be open ,the ice machine will stop running. Main power supply must be cut off before

conducting any operation for clearance and maintenance.

A、When the ice-machine doesn’t work in the state of “bin full” and “no water”, don’t
do any maintenance and repair for the ice-machine (especially in inner part of the
machine)as well to avoid to hurt people, because in such case, the ice-machine may
automatically start at any time.
B、For the ice machine has such a additive function when the ice machine
stopping( run/stop key switch to stop position), the ice-machine may automatically start ,
so do not do any operation for clearance and maintenance to avoid to hurt people. Main
power supply must be cut off before conducting any operation for clearance and
maintenance.

10
V. Operation Principle

1. Refrigeration System(See Figure 6)

When liquid refrigerant flows through vaporizer’s cylinder, the refrigerant in vaporization lowers the
temperature of vaporizer’s cylinder through heat exchange, meanwhile some water in contact with the
vaporizer’s surface gets frozen, and ice detaches from the surface under the action of ice blade in
passive rotation and falls into ice storage tank. Return water flow gets frozen when it flows through the
vaporizer for a second time under the action of water pump, then a continuous ice-production cycle has
now been established.

2. Water Circulation System(See Figure 6)

Tap water flows into the water tank via feed water pipe and floating valve. Water is pumped into the
dispensing pan and a given water level shall be maintained and flows to vaporizer’s interior surface, and
cooling process occurs gradually and part of the water turns into ice. With the act of ice blade, the ice
gets detached from the interior and falls into the ice storage tank.

Note:

1) Feedwater condition is monitored by a sensor. In case water tank runs out of water or has soft water
(demineralized), P.C. board stops the operation of the machine and the yellow LED turns on to indicate
low water level alarm. The machine will restore to normal operation after feed water recovers.

2) When being shipped out of the factory, the water level in water dispensing pan has regulated to be in
line with the red mark, neither increase nor decrease in water level shall be carried out. If the water level
is actually not in line with the red mark, the specified water level can be achieved through adjusting the
valve in water tank or the valve fixed on the top of vaporizer(with the distance H from the water surface
to the bottom of dispersing pan shall be 26mm for 10-ton and smaller ice machine, 38mm for 15-ton
Reducer motor Reducer
and bigger ice machine.

3. Ice Level Control Assembly

Between ice machine and ice storage tank exists an optical ice level control assembly. When ice reach
the full level, with a slice of ice cut through the light beam emitted by optical sensor, the red LED at the
center of P.C. board goes out immediately. After the light beam being cut off for a consecutive time,
production of ice machine stops and the yellow LED turns on to indicate ice full state. With ice
unloaded, the light beam resumes and the red LED at P.C. board’s center lights immediately. Ice
machine restarts in 3 minutes and ice full, yellow LED goes out.

4. Gear box system

This system consists of gearbox motor and reducer. The former drives the latter, and gearbox output
shaft propels the rotation of revolving ice blade and water dispersing pan. When gearbox motor runs in
wrong direction, or its speed is less than 1300rpm, a signal is sent by the sensor to the P.C. board, which
stops the operation of ice machine. The cause of fault shall be identified and the fault shall be eliminated
before ice machine being restarted. Press the Reset button on the P.C. board once or turn the Start/Stop
to stop them to start, then ice machine goes into normal operation.

5. P.C. Board Control System (See Figure 7)

P.C. Board implements the control the entire process of ice machine based on the signals transmitted by
different sensors.

VI. Safety Precautions:

Precaution: Main power supply must be cut off before conducting any operation for
clearance and maintenance, especially when the ice-machine doesn’t work in the state of “bin full”
and “no water”. In this case, don’t do any maintenance and repair for the ice-machine (especially in
inner part of the machine)as well, because in such case, the ice-machine may automatically start at
any time to hurt people.

Special care for the following safety precautions shall be taken into account during
commissioning, normal operation and maintenance of ice machine.

1) No repair or maintenance shall be carried out before ice machine has been confirmed not in operation
and disconnected from main power supply.

2) With ice machine in operation or energized, no body part or other object shall be allowed to insert into
its observation holes.

3) When abrupt power loss occurs, it shall be disconnected from the mains power supply switch, and then
observe: (1) freezing state of inner canister of vaporizer, with abnormal ice thickness on its interior, the
ice shall be removed first;(2)to verify the power supply is normal and ice machine can be restarted
after verification; (3) to verify ice blade is rotating in correct direction and in normal operation.

4) During installation, commissioning and operation, be sure never to allow your head to approach
pressure discharge port and easy-to-melt plug to prevent being hurt by the discharged refrigerant.

5) In condition of perfect protection (standing protection devices and protection masks). Careful inspection
on the condition of refrigeration pipelines shall be carried out in order to identify and eliminate the fault
of refrigerant leak. Good ventilation in working place shall be ensured, when necessary, mechanical
ventilation equipment and water sprinklers can be added.

6) In an emergency, such as fire, control the emission of refrigerant with manual depressure valve
according to operation manual of refrigeration system.

7) In case ice machine is kept out of operation for a long time, it shall be disconnected from the main
power supply and totally extract the refrigerant in vaporizer cylinder so as to avoid any accident of
electric shock or ammonia leak.

14
8) Other safe operation procedures of ammonia refrigeration system promulgated by the state shall be
strictly observed.

15
VII. Maintenance and Care of Ice Machine

Warning: No cleaning or maintenance shall be allowed before ice machine

being disconnected from power and water supply.

The proper maintenance and care for ice machine can maximize its performance and working life. All
maintenance and care shall be carried out by qualified personnel or those who have been trained by us. Pre-
job training shall be implemented for substitutes of maintenance staff to ensure consistent and correct
operation, maintenance and care of ice machine and to avoid faults, accidents or losses arising from human
mistake.

1) Important Maintenance

During the preliminary stage of ice production (Approx one-week or one month), cleaning for
Electromagnetic valve shall be carried out by well-trained (or professional) maintenance staff to
avoid Electromagnetic valve core, fore-guide valve hole and piston from being block or stuck.
Before dismantling and cleaning the Electromagnetic valve’s pipeline, the ammonia in it shall be
completely discharged. For operation in detail, please refer to Figure 8 & 9- Electromagnetic
valve’s Sketch. In addition, the Electromagnetic valve and its front screen shall be cleaned.

2) Tap water quality shall be guaranteed and periodic cleaning shall be carried out for water bin and feed
water pipelines to ensure smooth flow in water system, and all pipe fittings shall be free of leak.

3) Regular inspection shall be carried on the level of water dispensing pan, which shall be in line with the
red mark, and can be regulated by the water valve beside the water dispersing pan, and on the status of
water outflow to prevent water from dripping into ice storage bin or ice conveying system.

4) Regular inspection shall be conducted on the connections to verify they are not loose or dummy
connections, and earth wire is fixed, insulation of electrical parts not damaged.

5) Frequent inspection on refrigeration pipelines and valves shall be conducted to identify their leakages
and loosing or leaking at flange fittings.

6) Good housekeeping shall be maintained for main parts of ice machine like gear box and control cabinet

7) Regular inspection on ice blade spacing shall be conducted. Too big spacing between ice blades will
affect the removal of ice.
8) Ice machine needs regularly oil discharge. Evaporator with the frozen oil inside will affect the heat
transfer effect.
In the cooling system, the exhaust gas of the compressor is mixed with a number of lubricant steams.
When refrigerant gas comes into the pipeline and heat exchanger, to avoid the reduce of the heat transfer
effectiveness of cooling equipment caused by redundant lubricants come into the system, the ammonia
supplied to the evaporator of the ice machine should be more than 99.9% oil free ammonia. Otherwise,

16
oil-rich ammonia will produce oil films on the internal wall of the evaporator and affect the heat transfer
efficiency, therefore reducing the ice production of the ice machine. For ensuring the stability of the
production of ice machine, we suggest to install a high performance oil separator (recommend the use of
secondary oil separator), and discharge oil regularly for the ice machine and the entire cooling system.
1. Time confirmation of the oil discharge for evaporator of the ice machine:
The oil should be discharged from evaporator of the ice machine when cooling system operates
normally and production declines.
2. Oil discharge method (recommend the use of pressure thermal ammonia)
The operating steps are as follows: close globe valves (1,2), remove the refrigerants in the evaporator
of the ice machine back to cooling system. And then close extraction stop valve (3), by-pass globe
valve (4) and fluid valve (see attached diagram). Afterwards, slowly open the valve of high-pressure
thermal ammonia (pressure shall not exceed 0.7 to 0.8 Mpa). When the pressure of the evaporator is
saturated, swiftly open the fluid valve of a process on the evaporator for oil discharge from the oil
discharge valve which is on the most bottom of evaporator. Discharge oil into the oil catcher of the
system by use of high-speed movement of the airflow. After the pressure of the evaporator reduces,
repeat oil discharge process, until the oil inside of the pipeline is completely ruled out; each regulation
valve of the ice machine can be resumed to normal status.
Note: the large evaporator of the ice machine is composed of many processes, therefore,

9) Check and replace the reducer’s lubrication oil regularly

10)Maintenance and use of valves:

Regular application of rustproof oil shall be carried out on surface of valve rod and lock nuts to ensure
smooth diverting and keep valve rod and seal free of damage. For the rusted valve rods, the rust on the
surface shall be removed completely and then attempts to open or close such valves rods shall be
practiced.
All valves that are required to be closed shall be closed manually instead of using torque wrench or
thrust.
Those valves that are required to be set to normal open position, the handwheel shall be reversed by
1/10-1/8 turn form its full open position.

11) For Electromagnetic valve:

In case of Electromagnetic ’s failure to be opened, bypass valve can be opened to keep ice machine in
continuous operation. Another option is to rotate crown bar to force Electromagnetic valve open and to
start service (former method is recommended). The method is as follows:

18
(1) Dismantle the lowest seal cap of the Electromagnetic valve e with two spanners of right size,
one of which shall be used to keep bolt cap fixed and the other is used to loosen the seal cap. Loose
bolt cap will cause a large amount of ammonia leakage from which severe personal injuries will
result. (2) Screw the valve body inwards, and the valve will be opened gradually. Stop screwing it
when it reaches the end (opposite process will close the valve and tighten seal cap). Special
attention shall be paid to safety (See Figure 8 and Figure 9).

In case any thorough cleaning and care are to be carried out for ice machine, the job shall be
performed by our maintenance and service staff or professionals who have been trained by us.

Without our consent, no parts and accessories other than our products shall be allowed for use on the
ice machine.
It is prohibited to start gear box and water pump during cleaning.
It is prohibited to use the liquid that has content of detergent, acid or alkaline for ice production.
