EXPERIMENT No: 10
ESTIMATION OF CEPHALAXIN IN GIVEN SAMPLE

AIM: estimation of cephalaxin in the given sample.

APPARATUS: burette, pipette, conical flask, beaker, 100 ml

measuring cylinder, stopper bottle.

REQUIREMENTS: cephalaxin tablet, 1 N HCL, 1 N NaOH, 0.1 N

Na2S2O3, buffer solution (5.4% W/V CH3COONa + 2.4 % V/V
glacial acid), 0.02 N I2 solution, starch solution.

PROCESS:

STEP-1
1. dissolve 0.01 g of sample in to 10 ml of distilled water in
stopper bottle
2. Add 5 ml of 1 N NaOH solution and allow it to stand for 20
min.
3. Add 20 ml of freshly prepared buffer solution and 5 ml of 1
N HCL and 50 ml of 0.02 N I2 solutions.
4. Close the stopper bottle and allow it to stand for 20 min
protecting it from sunlight.
5. Add 2-3 drops of starch indicator.
6. Titrate the excess of I2 with 0.1 N Na2S2O3 solutions.
7. End point will be dark brown to colorless.

STEP-2
Repeat the above operation with the same quantity with the
same chemicals omitting only cephalaxin.

OBSERVATION:

1. burette reading (sample) = X ml

2. burette reading (blank) = Y ml
3. burette reading (difference) = Y-X = Z ml

CALCULATIONS:

Grams of cephalaxin = Z X 0.0073 = ________ g.

% cephalaxin = grams of cephalaxin * 100

Weight of sample

= ________ %

RESULT:

1 cephalaxine
