A STORY OF RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Religious liberty is one of the most conten-

tious political issues of our time. How should
people of faith engage with the public square
in a pluralist era?

This dispute is not new, and it goes back

to the founding era of American history.
Historian Brandon O’Brien unveils an untold
story of how religious liberty came to be.
Between theocracy and secularism, Baptist
pastor Isaac Backus contended for a third
way. He worked to secure religious liberty
and freedom of conscience for all Americans,
not just for one particular denomination or
religious tradition.

“[O’Brien] has addressed the current, hot issue of religious liberty by reminding us of one of
its greatest American champions, Isaac Backus. He brings to life the contentions of Backus’s
day to illumine our own and helps us pursue a liberty that will be a blessing to unbelievers
and religious alike. As is often the case, looking backward is the soundest way to go forward.”

Q & A WITH THE AUTHOR

WHY IS THIS SUCH A TIMELY BOOK?
O’Brien: Americans are debating religious liberty on many fronts these days. American evan-
gelicals need historical and theological foundations for discussing religious liberty.

WHAT IS THE MESSAGE AT THE HEART OF DEMANDING LIBERTY?

O’Brien: At the center of the book is the story of Isaac Backus, a man who became born
again during the First Great Awakening and battled for religious liberty until he died more
than fifty years later. His story illustrates that religious liberty is an ideal that America has
never fully realized; there’s always been a lot of work to do and there is still a lot of work to
do. His example points us toward some helpful postures and approaches in our own time.

HOW IS YOUR APPROACH TO THE TOPIC OF RELIGIOUS LIBERTY UNIQUE?

O’Brien: This approach is distinctive, I believe, because it is story driven. It’s not a theoretical

or philosophical treatise on religious liberty. It’s not an in-depth dissection of current events.
It touches on both of those things. But it does so by elevating the example of one extremely
relatable historical figure.

CONFORMED TO THE IMAGE OF HIS SON

Haley Goranson Jacob
Foreword by N. T. Wright
What does Paul mean when in Romans 8:29 he speaks of being
“conformed to the image of his Son”? Is it a moral or spiritual
or sanctifying conformity to Christ or to his suffering, or does it
point to an eschatological transformation into radiant glory? Haley
Goranson Jacob points out that the key lies in the meaning of
“glory” in Paul’s biblical-theological perspective and in how he uses
the language of glory in Romans.
