Class Learning Objective The student will investigate and understand that organisms reproduce and transmit genetic information to new generations. Content
Key concepts include
c) genotypes and phenotypes; d) characteristics that can and cannot be inherited Online Activity Before the activity begins, the students are going to read the sections in the textbook/ the supplied handouts or packets that refer to DNA, genotypes, phenotypes, and how the characteristics of the parents get passed to their children. The readings will provide the students with the basic information they will need for the topic. The teacher will provide a screen-sharing video of her/him finding using the internet search to find the simulator for the students to follow if they are having trouble locating the website. Additionally, the teacher will provide a photo of the simulator, so the students can be sure they are on the right page. Once the readings are complete, they will need to follow the given steps: 1. Open the web browser (Explorer, Firefox, Chrome). 2. Go to www.google.com 3. Type in “Punnett square simulator” into the search bar. 4. Click on the second link. The one that reads “Punnett Squares - McGraw Hill Higher Education”. 5. Once the screen loads, they will click on the TV on the screen that lights up when you put your cursor over it. 6. Watch the video that explains what a Punnett Square is and how it works. 7. When the video has finished, click the “x” to make the video leave the screen. 8. Move your cursor over to lab journal. Click on the journal and the activity will appear. 9. Complete the activity with the instructions on the provided on the left side of the screen. 10. Fill out the table provided at the bottom of the screen. Pedagogy
11. Complete this activity 5 times to make sure you fully
understand how the phenotypes and genotypes work and are expressed. This simulator is a good way for the students to put their knowledge into practice because it makes them think about the different genes. For example, the simulator will give you two flies and tell you to make a cross between a heterogenous long-winged fly and a homozygous vestigial-winged fly. You must check that you have 1) chosen the right parents, 2) chosen the right offspring picture, and 3) chosen the right genotype. If you are wrong, it prompts you so that you can find the right solution. You can go through this simulation as many times as you want, and it will continue to give you different combinations of parent genotypes so that you can find the correct offspring. The interactive nature of the simulator will help the students have a deeper and more throughout understanding of the material they are learning. Once the students have completed their simulations 5 different times, they will need to print (Save as PDF) their completed table and turn it into the teacher for grading.
