Unit Title: Electricity and Magnetism Name: Lauren Smith

Content Area: Physics Grade Level: 11-12
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
 HS-PS-1. Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons on the patterns of electrons in the
outermost energy level of atoms.
 HS-PS1-3 Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces
between particles.
 HS-PS2-4 Use Mathematical representations of Newton’s Law of Gravitation and Coulomb’s Law to describe and predict the gravitational and electrostatic forces
between objects.
 HS-PS2-6 Communicate scientific and technical information about why the molecular-level structure is important in the functioning of designed materials.
 HS-PS3-2 Develop and use models to illustrate the energy at the macroscopic scale can be accounted for as a combination of energy associated with the motion of
particles (objects) and energy associated with the relative position of particles (objects).
 HS-PS3-5 Develop and use a model of two objects interacting through electric or magnetic fields to illustrate the forces between objects and the changes in energy
of the objects due to the interaction.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Driving Question/Essential Question: How can a train work without wheels or an engine? How does a Maglev train work?

Student Learning Objectives:

 Students will be able to understand, identify, and sketch the various forces at work in a system, including but not limited to gravitational, normal, electric, and
magnetic.
 Students will be able to model a system of interacting objects both conceptually and mathematically.
 Students will be able to use the given formulas for the forces as evidence to describe that the change in the energy of objects interacting through electric or
gravitational forces depends on the distance between the objects.

Unit Summary:
In this unit, we will explore the topics of electricity and magnetism, and how they relate to each other, as well as to past topics of forces and energy. We will begin by
exploring static electricity, including how it relates to gravity (a topic from earlier in the course). As part of this, we will look at electric fields and interacting charged
particles. We will then look at continuous, or moving, electricity in circuit electricity. In circuits, we will see how electricity “flows” and sources of electricity. This will then
lead us into magnetism, specifically electromagnetism. We will look at how electricity and magnetism relate to each other, briefly explore how power and transmission work,
and, ultimately, be able to answer our driving question: How can a train work without wheels or an engine?
