Objectives
Goal #1: By the end of the practicum experience, the student nurse will be able to effectively
communicate patient report for all assigned patients using the situation, background,
assessment, recommendation (SBAR) format (Course objective # 4).
Objective #1: By the second clinical day, the student nurse will analyze the reporting
method used by the orthopedic unit and evaluate how patient report is given from the
nurse to other members of the healthcare team.
Objective #2: By the third clinical day, the student nurse will be able to report crucial
elements required for patients in this environment of care.
Objective #3: By midpoint of the practicum experience, the student nurse will be able to
report using the SBAR format on three patients with minimal cues from nurse preceptor.

Goal #2: By the end of the practicum experience, the student nurse will perform any skills that
she might have the opportunity to do under the supervision of the assigned nurse preceptor.
(Course objective # 1).
Objective #1: By the second clinical day, the student nurse will be able to identify three
new nursing skills to participate in by the end of the practicum experience.
Objective #2: By midpoint of the practicum experience, the student nurse will actively
seek out any new skills to participate in and have completed at least one new nursing
skill under the supervision of the nurse preceptor.
Objective #3: By the end of the practicum experience, the student nurse will be
proficient in at least three new nursing skills with minimal prompting from the nurse
preceptor.

Goal #3: By the end of the practicum experience, the student nurse will deliver appropriate
discharge teaching and instructions to all patients ready for discharge under the supervision of
the assigned nurse preceptor (Course objective # 6).
Objective #1: By midpoint of the practicum experience, the student nurse will have
analyzed how discharge teaching and instruction is given by the nurse preceptor on all
patient’s ready for discharge.

Objective #2: By midpoint of the practicum experience, the student nurse will be able to
identify all components and resources involved in the discharge process.
Objective #3: By the fifth clinical day, the student nurse will have attempted to give
discharge teaching and instructions on all patients approved for discharge under the
supervision of the nurse preceptor.

Personal Development Plan


Personal Reflection: After careful self-reflection, I have become aware that I need to work on
incorporating self-care techniques into my busy schedule to allow for healthy ways of dealing
with stress.
Personal Goal: I will incorporate and complete at least 3 self-care techniques each week.
Objective #1: I will take a 30 minute walk outside or run on the treadmill at least three
times a week.
Objective #2: I will set aside at least 15 minutes a day to have quiet time away from any
work related to school, home or other areas, electronic free, to reflect on my thoughts
and feelings.
Objective #3: I will include healthy snacks and meals in my daily eating habits.
