Assignment-3 (Total points-100)

Due date: Sep 15, 2016

1. At the proportional limit, a 2-inch gage length of a 0.375-in.-diameter alloy bar has elongated
0.0083 in. and the diameter has been reduced 0.0005 in. The total tension force on the bar was
4.75 kips. Determine the following properties of the material: (a) the modulus of elasticity. (b)
Poisson’s ratio.

2. A structural member in a nuclear reactor is made of a zirconium alloy. If an axial load of 4 kip is
to be supported by the member, determine its required cross-sectional area. Use a factor of safety
of 3 relative to yielding. What is the load on the member if it is 3 ft long and its elongation is 0.02
in.? E=14*103 ksi, σy=57.5 ksi. The material has elastic behavior.

3. The strut is supported by a pin at C and an A-36 steel guy wire AB. If the wire has a diameter of
0.2 in., determine how much it stretches when the distributed load acts on the strut. σy=36 ksi.

4. A nylon [E = 360 ksi; ν= 0.4] rod (1) having a diameter of d1 = 2.50 in. is placed inside a steel [E
= 29,000 ksi] tube (2) as shown in Figure P3.7. The inside diameter of the steel tube is d2 = 2.52
in. An external load P is applied to the nylon rod, compressing it. At what value of P will the
space between the nylon rod and the steel tube be closed?

5. The thin-walled tube is subjected to an axial force of 40 kN. If the tube elongates 3 mm and its
circumference decreases 0.09 mm, determine the modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio, and the
shear modulus of the tube’s material. The material behaves elastically.
