1) −4 + 12 + (−9) =

2) 18 − (−4) =

3) −7 − (−2) =

4) 𝑎 + (−𝑎) = 0 .

What property of mathematics is being illustrated? ________________________

5) The temperature outside one night was 31°. Then a cold front came through and
dropped the temperature to -6°. What is the difference between these two
temperatures?

Review: How can you use Additive Inverse to solve subtraction of integer problems? Give an
example and show how you used Additive Inverse to solve it.
Math 7 Subtracting Integers Lesson II

7.NS.1
Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract
rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line
diagram.
7.NS.1c
Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse,
p-q=p+(-q). Showing that the distance between two rationals numbers on the number line is the
absolute value of their difference.
7.NS.3
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational
numbers.
Mathematical Practices: Model with mathematics, Use appropriate tools strategically, Look for
and make use of structure.

Guided Practice:

Solve each subtraction problem by writing an equivalent addition problem:

1. The temperature in Caribou, Maine was 8° F at noon. By 10:00 P.M. the temperature
had dropped to -4°F. Find the change in temperatures.
2. The highest temperature recorded in N. America is 134F in Death Valley, CA and the
lowest temperature recorded is -80F in Prospect Creek, Alaska. What is the range of
temperatures?

3. On the Mean Streak roller coaster in Ohio, your altitude changes by -155 ft. The Texas
Giant in Texas has a change in altitude of -135ft. How much further do you drop on
the Mean Streak than on the Texas Giant?
To evaluate expression involving variables, replace the variables with their values and then
perform the given operations. Don’t forget to change subtraction problems into addition
problems using the additive inverse.

Evaluate: x – y if x = -6 and y = -5

Evaluate m – n if m = -15 and n = 8

Evaluate the following if a = 5, b = -8 and c = -9

a–b

b – 10

c–a

Evaluate a – b if a = -10 and b = 4

Evaluate g – h if g = -2 and h = -7
More Practice:

1) 14 – 17 =

2) 14 – (-10) =

3) 12 – 26 =

4) Evaluate q – r if q = -14 and r = -6
