Assignment no. 1 July 19, 2016

1) Research is defined as the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing
knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts,
methodologies and understandings. This could include synthesis and analysis of
previous research to the extent that it leads to new and creative outcomes.

This definition of research is consistent with a broad notion of research and

experimental development (R&D) as comprising of creative work undertaken on a
systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge
of humanity, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise
new applications. This definition of research encompasses pure and strategic
basic research, applied research and experimental development. Applied research
is original investigation undertaken to acquire new knowledge but directed towards
a specific, practical aim or objective (including a client-driven purpose).

Research is originated from the root word “search” meaning facts and information
already exist and the prefix “re” to find it but it requires systematic procedures. A
scholarly ideas will gather together to serve as basis for the formulation of new
ideas or confirmation of the previous ideas.

2) Types of research can be classified in many different ways. Some major ways of
classifying research include the following.

 Descriptive versus Analytical Research

 Applied versus Fundamental Research
 Qualitative versus Quantitative Research
 Conceptual versus Empirical Research

Descriptive research concentrates on finding facts to ascertain the nature of

something as it exists. In contrast analytical research is concerned with
determining validity of hypothesis based on analysis of facts collected. An example
of a descriptive type of research is conducting a case study. Analytical research is
conducted in a variety of ways including literary research, public opinion, scientific
trials and Meta-analysis.
Applied research is carried out to find answers to practical problems to be solved
and as an aid in decision making in different areas including product design,
process design and policy making. Fundamental research, also known as basic or
pure research is carried out as more to satisfy intellectual curiosity, than with the
intention of using the research findings for any immediate practical application. An
example of an applied research is research that addresses the effectiveness of a
fundraising technique. An example of fundamental research is critical analysis of
factors impacting each stage of product life cycle.

Quantitative research studies such aspects of the research subject which are not
quantifiable, and hence not subject to measurement and quantitative analysis. In
contrast quantitative research make substantial use of measurements and
quantitative analysis techniques. Examples of quantitative research are surveys,
questionnaires and content analysis. While observations, focus groups and
interviewing are examples of qualitative research.

Conceptual research is involves investigation of thoughts and ideas and

developing new ideas or interpreting the old ones based on logical reasoning. In
contrast empirical research is based on firm verifiable data collected by either
observation of facts under natural condition or obtained through experimentation.
An example of conceptual research is finding out what causes a certain disease,
which requires thinking and observation. Examples of empirical research include
measuring the levels of noise pollution found in an urban area to determine the
average levels of sound exposure experienced by its inhabitants.

and developments of all the segments in Philippines education industry over the years.
Future analysis of the industry along with its various market segments is provided on the
basis of revenues over the next five years.

4) The purpose of research is to inform action. Thus, your study should seek to
contextualize its findings within the larger body of research. Research must always be
high quality in order to produce knowledge that is applicable outside of the research
setting with implications that go beyond the group that has participated in the
research. Furthermore, the results of your study should have implications for policy and
project implementation.
