II: Relative Oxidizing Powers of the Halogens

a) Color of the halogen in solution: upon mixing Br2,Cl2 and I2 water with hexane the
following colors were observed:

Br2 Cl2 I2
Hexane Orange yellow purple
Water Light orange yellow brown

b) Use the following observations and determine if a reaction has occurred or not.

Br- Cl- I-

III : Identification of an Alkaline Earth Halide:

Use the following observation to determine the identity of the alkaline earth halide.

1. Adding 1 M H2SO4, 1 M Na2CO3, (NH4)2C2O4 and 0.1 M KIO3 to the unknown

produced a white precipitate.
2. Unknown and Cl2 water in Hexane – no color change
3. Unknown and Br2 water in Hexane – no color change
4. Unknown and I2 water in Hexane – no color change
