INTRODUCTION
Bituminous materials, a by-product of the oil distillation process, look set to remain as a consti-
tuent material of road paving for some considerable time to come, being used to withstand the flexural
and compressive stresses caused by traffic. Due to the ever increasing intensity of today’s traffic con-
ditions there is a demand for higher levels of performance from asphalt. As a result, the testing of the
asphalt needs to look not only at the constituent mix but the performance characteristics as well. There is
an increasing demand to monitor the asphalt for voids percentage, look at the levels of compaction and
investigate parameters such as the stiffness modulus and fatigue resistance in relation to the temperature,
together with frequency of load or strain application. The range of testing equipment in this section of the
catalogue is in conformity with the new EN European Standards and the requirements of SHRP (Strategic
Highway Research Program) to allow for a more in depth and realistic analysis of asphalt mixes.
In the majority of cases the new EN standards correspond to some existing National Standards and,
apart for some exception, there should be almost no difference in the specification of test apparatus.

General description and specifications
The centrifuges are used for the deter-
mination of bitumen percentage in bitu-
minous mixtures. All models comprise a
removable precision-machined rotor bowl
housed in a cylindrical aluminium box.
They are driven by an electric motor fitted
with AC drive (inverter) with the double
function of speed control up to 3600 r.p.m.
regardless of the frequency (50 or 60 Hz)
and electrical braking. The centrifuge can
be set for the automatic speed ramp up to
3600 r.p.m. or to any intermediate speed by
the front knob. A digital display monitors
the frequency, which is proportional to
the speed.
The rotating unit is suspended on the base
by four calibrated springs, which assure a
perfect stability all over the test. The cover
is precisely machined and fitted with sol-
vent resistant gasket to avoid leakages.
All models are fitted, for emergency use,
by a hand brake system. The control panel
includes: Start/Stop button, speed control
knob, and digital display.
Two versions available: standard and explo-
sion proof. The standard model can be
upgraded with the electromagnetic system
to prevent the opening of the cover during
rotation. See code 75-B2210/UP1. These
upgrading option arrangements have to
be factory installed and specified at time

Introduction
The importance of a precise gyratory angle
has been widely noted. The measurement
of the internal angle represents, in practice,
the most accurate method of calibration.
This method comprises two individual
values:
- Angle between cylinder and top plate
and
- Angle between cylinder and bottom
plate.
The average of these two values is taken
as the “internal angle”. To date the angle
calibration of gyratory compactors has
been considered a difficult task leading to
wide variations in results even between
machines of the same brand.
The 76-B0255 ILS calibration device fully
satisfies the verifications requirements to
measure the internal angle conforming to
EN 12697-31 Annex C. It can also be used
on any makes of gyratory compactors.

ILS Internal Angle
Measurement apparatus
General description
and operating principle
The ILS measuring tool is an electromecha-
nical device in cylindrical shape, which will
perfectly suit into any gyratory mould (in
accordance with 150 mm standard).
One short run (10 cycles) is performed for 76-B0255 Complete set
measuring the internal compaction angle
of the upper end plate. The ILS is read, and
the same is repeated for the bottom end
plate. The all over gyratory angle is deter-
mined by these two angle values.
During the measurements the ILS is gene-
rating an accurate mechanical load simula-
ting the presence of mixture, at the correct
height of a real mix.
By using different generated load levels
similar way the angle response of the com-
paction machine can also be measured.

Determination of stiffness
Introduction
New testing procedures, which implement
the existing ASTM methods have been uti-
lised to determine the stiffness properties
of bituminous mixtures. New EN specifica-
tions now cover these important determi-
nations too. We propose a vaste range of
advanced testing systems including Servo-
pneumatic and Servo-hydraulic Universal
Testing Machines for tension, compres-
sion, and dynamic loading.
I/O module
- 8 low noise “normalised” analog input
channels
- Up to 20 bit auto-ranging data acquisition
4x oversampled data acquisition for low
noise performance
LVDT Normalised transducers
Introduction
Our innovative approach to system design
has allowed us to produce smaller, more
cost effective designs without degrading
system performance. In many cases, our
lower capacity pneumatic machines out-
perform larger, more expensive hydraulic
systems.
Pneumatically driven machines excel at
low forces where accurate control of force
is imperative. Whit stiff specimens, due to
the compressibility of air, the servo-valve
operates over a greater proportion of its
dynamic range. We offer two models 5 and
14 kN capacity.
General description
Base system capable of applying loads up
to 5 or 14 kN comprising: test frame, pneu-
matic actuator, pneumatic interface, filters,
regulators, connections etc.
The load frame includes the Control and Data
Acquisition System (see IMACS: Integrated
Multi-Axis Control System on page 401). The
test module has to be selected depending
on the test to be performed. See accessories

The clamping force is controlled by regula-
ting the motor current. The electrical supply
to motor drive circuit is provided by the
IMACS.
The hydraulic system uses a bottom loading
actuator system with an electro-hydraulic
servo-valve, with PID feedback loop control 77-B3311
and a run time adaptive control that adjusts
the command signal on the fly during
testing. The pump motor is 230 V, single
phase, approximately 2 HP.
The pump uses a thermostatically controlled
fan-forced air cooling system to cool the
hydraulic oil.
The PC software, conforming to EN
12697-26, 12697-24, and 13108-20, is
user friendly, menu driven and written in
Borland Dephi (Windows). In operation, the
system gathers the dynamic data from the
specimen under test, then displays plots
appropriate to each test type and function
mode, in real time on the PC. The software
automatically saves test information in
binary files, which then provides the off-line

Introduction
Since Superpave’s inception more than
a decade ago, asphalt mix designers in
North America have searched for a simple
mechanical “proof” test analogous to
Marshall stability and flow tests and Hveem
stabilometer method, so as not to rely solely
on performance-grade (PG) binder specifica-
tions and volumetric design method.
The Simple Performance Tester (SPT) is the
culmination of that search, based on the
success of two National Cooperative High-
way Research Program (NCHRP) projects.
We have been involved in these projects
from the beginning and the SPT has been
approved by NCHRP.
SPT is an innovative, integrated hydraulic
testing machine incorporating a high-
performance hydraulic actuator, air-cooled
hydraulic power pack, Control and Data Ac-
quisition System (see IMACS on page 401),
a combined triaxial cell and environmental
chamber, with its own temperature control
unit, in one compact machine.
The SPT was specifically designed to perform
the three candidate tests developed under
NCHRP projects 9-19 and 9-29.
Numerous sensors and safety interlocks are
incorporated in the design for operator sa-
fety and the triaxial cell is self-opening and
closing for ease and speed of operation.

1°C General description and specifications
The apparatus consists of a stainless steel
pressure vessel with encased band heaters
and integral pressure and temperature
controls. A platinum RTD measures internal
test temperature to ± 0.1°C. Selectable test
temperatures (standard 90/100/110°C) are
controlled to ± 0.2°C. Pressure is monito-
red by transducer and controlled to 2.1 ±
0.1 MPa. Temperature and pressure digi-
tal indicators display both set points and
actual values.
Temperature and pressure calibration can
be site executed. An excess pressure relief
valve and a temperature high limit are
standard safety features. Data logging of
both temperature and pressure and PC
transfer of data at the end of the test.
