(Pattern writing, book reports, journalese)
Reading to writing as listening to speaking cannot
be divorced from each other. It means that as you speak,
you use what you have listened to. The same thing happens
in reading. When you are given a writing task, you normally,
develop your essay based on some of your readings.
However, you do not consider each language skill as
separate from each other because each is intertwined.
Reading to writing is a process in which an effective
reader becomes an effective writer. This may mean
observing and analyzing the writing style of an author in
order to fully understand the process and rigors writing.
Pattern Writing
Pattern writing is a process of sentence
transformation. It means that all the activities are based on
identifying and using the pattern to generate sentences.
There are certain ways to do it:
 Start out on a simple pattern. Focus on an
important element of language.
 Allow students to supply the pattern. Focus on an
important element of language.
 Allow students to supply the patterns. Let them call
out the word suggestion in order to feeling confident
in what they are doing.
 Start with patterns that come from your previous
lessons.
 You may take a sentence pattern that from a book
you have just read aloud.
 Involve voice and movement as students’ energy
and active level is getting high.
Examples:
I see a woman.
I see a woman walking.
I see a woman walking on the street.
I see woman walking on the street of San
Francisco.
I see a woman walking on the street of San
Francisco, California.
Book Report
One of the many requirements of the subject
particularly in English is writing a book report. Book
report and book reviews are somewhat similar.
However, book reports are more descriptive while book
reviews are more persuasive in nature. Both
compromise the summary and commentary at the latter
part. Also, both have to demonstrate a deep
understanding of the text just read. Although your
teacher requires you a format to use, the following parts
may be of great help.
I. Introduction – gives a very good background
of the book and is composed of the following
subparts:
 Title
 Publication information
 Genre
 A brief intro of the book
II. Body - compose of two sections:
 Explanation of what the book is
 Opinion about the book
For fiction or creative writing: Brief description of
the setting, characters, and point of view as well as mood or
tone
For non- fiction: overview of the topic, main points
and arguments.
III. Analysis and evaluation – when you critique
the book by writing your own opinion.
IV. Conclusion – concluding thoughts about the
impressions the book has provided or
something that you want the readers to know
about the book.
Journalese
This is quilt of instance words put together with the
other parts of speech. Here, nouns are used as verbs
(to host, to author a book) and sensationalizing
adjectives into nouns (the greats, the notables).
Although journalese is never used in everyday
conversation, it has extended its use in newspaper
headlines. There are words that are used in the
newspaper headlines to appear so punchy. These
include: tot for child, dub for nickname, for example.
Additionally, journalese is characterized by clichés and
is now regarded as journalistic style.
