The 16th president of the Republic of the Philippines
Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte held his third State of the Nation
Address (SONA) yesterday at Batasang Pambansa. The scope of
this critical analysis is the major political, economic, and
environmental points that president Duterte had discussed. Some
significant details about the SONA also encompasses this paper.
President Duterte tackled some issue about the political
aspects of the country. According to the president, he is eager and
keen about the ratification of the federalism in upper and lower
house. This federal constitution is one of the promises of president
Duterte during his campaign. But according to the Senate
President Tito Sotto in his recent interview, the senate will not
rush the charter change bill and upper house will focus first in the
ratification of Bangsamoro Organic Law. They will use the
Bangsamoro Organic Law as an example before passing the
charter change bill in the senate since both bill have almost the
same structure and purpose. President Duterte also said that he
will read and sign the Bangsamoro Organic Law within the 48
hours period. According to President Duterte, he wants
Philippines to seek stronger bond with ASEAN members. He will
continue to implement the independent foreign policy and reach
out other nation.
In terms of political aspect, we can see that President
Duterte is really working on his promises. We hope that
Federalism will really work and not just another mistakes by the
Government. It is quite noticeable that he didn’t mention America.
Boracay Island and according to him, Baracay Island become the
representation of the negligence of the Philippine government.
Aside from it, he insisted the creation of the Department of
Disaster Management. He said that we must learn from Yolanda
and other disaster in our country.
President Duterte mentioned the rehabilitation of Boracay
but not the livelihood that will be lost during the rehabilitation.
Aside from that, he will create Department of Disaster
Management although we already have National Disaster Risk
Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
There are so many key points regarding the economic
aspect of the Philippines that President Duterte had been
discussed during the SONA. The president of the Philippines
demanded the congress to pass a legislation to end
contractualization. According to him, almost 300, 000 has been
underwent to regularization. He also ensure the Philippines
telecom services are reliable, inexpensive, and secure. Lower
interconnection rates between industry players is one of the
promise of the president. He also urge Congress to pass bill
establishing coconut farmers' trust fund. By the end of July 2018,
all packages of my tax reform would have been submitted to
Congress; aside from TRAIN, rice ratification also. He said that we
need a lower price for rice and ask businesses to cooperate in
stabilizing rice prices.
President didn’t tackle his accomplishment during 2017
but instead, he made his speech short and simple. Based from
what the presidents said, we can definitely assume that this future
projects of the president will benefit us. But we, as an individual,
must help ourselves.
