Why: As a student taking the IC engine course, you should start getting curious about spotting its uses
in the world around you. With this knowledge, you will start developing an appreciation for the current
level of penetration of this technology in our lives. Also, with some numbers/figures at hand, you
would be ready to have an intelligent conversation on this topic with anyone interested.

What: Please list at-least 20 distinct examples of IC engines in use at present or in near past, and list
their following specifications:
1) Engine name / Manufacturer name:
2) Rated power (in KW or horse-power):
3) Rated engine rpm (revolutions per minute):
4) Fuels allowed to burn:
5) Engine efficiency (%) or specific fuel consumption (g/KW.h or lb/hp.h):
6) Number of cylinders:
7) Cylinder arrangement (optional): e.g. single, in-line, V-type, W-type etc.
8) Type of cooling of the cylinder/liner (optional):
9) Any trivia, special features (optional): e.g. hybrid application etc.
10) Source of information (mandatory): Internet link, book, magazine with issue number etc.

At present stage, please do not hesitate to list any term described above, even though it`s full
implication is not immediately clear. Target is to have you start getting accustomed to such terms as
we develop better understanding on them through this course.

How: Internet should be quite convenient to use for this one. Once you locate the source of
information, most of the above information should be readily available on it. However, some rules
need to be followed to make most effective use of this activity. Those are:
1) Shared submissions (having >60% overlap with each other) will be grouped together and will
be getting shared marks (Total marks / no. of students in that group)
2) Criteria for evaluating the submissions will be: Distinctiveness, Count and Variety of the
examples as well as the details provided in the examples.
3) As the automotive industry is huge, the maximum number of examples coming from it in a
submission are limited to 6 (six).

For your help, in the first lecture the following uses of reciprocating IC engine were listed:
 Transportation: Automotive, Locomotives, Light Aircraft, Helicopters, Marine
 Power generation: Portable Gensets, Fixed power for apartments/ building complexes,
Aircraft and locomotive APUs (auxiliary power units)
 Utilities/ Industrial: Earthmoving equipment (Dumper, tippers), Mining equipment (Graders,
Excavators, Dozers), Agricultural pumps, Lawnmowers, Snow Blowers, Power tools
It would be greatly appreciated if you are adding more categories to the above. I believe it will be fun
and easy once you start browsing on this topic and we can share experiences in the class as well.
