Most of the time, the space bar is sufficient for adding space between characters. However, the
space on the ` key is used to have an upper figure with no lower figure, and the space on the ~
key is used to adjust for a tie below a flag.

The lower augmentation dots follow notes and the upper augmentation dots follow rests. The
lower augmentation dots have no width so that they can be placed underneath flags, beams and
ties.
