GRINDING STONES
The roughness of a commutator or slip ring in an electrical
machine must be correct. This is essential to achieve a good
skin deposit, satisfactory current distribution and optimum
brush stability. Please refer to technical instructions STA BE 16-1
for further information about the roughness of commutators
and slip rings.
The commutator or slip ring must be fine ground after
grinding with a medium stone, in order to achieve this
roughness. Typically stone 90623N performs this service
perfectly for all types of commutators and slip rings. If you
would like to fine grind a commutator or slip ring manually
to restore its roughness without disassembling the machine,
it is preferable to use a motor-type grinding stone with handle.
The 90602N is ideal for motors up to 15 kW, while the
90651N is suitable for motor up to 150 kW. For larger
motors, use the 90612N or 90607N that are larger.

Our grinding stones have different grain sizes depending on the type of work to be done. These stones are suitable for
copper, bronze and steel.
• Coarse stone: with large grains, it does not separate very much and is good for removing large quantities of materials.
• Medium stone: with medium grains, for machining minor defects. This stone is recommended for finish grinding
of commutators and slip rings. Its grain is specially selected to restore the roughness necessary for mechanical
stability of the brush and for burnishing.
• Finishing stone: with fine grains for cleaning the commutator or for restoring the correct roughness to some types of
soft commutator copper.

➠ Hand tool for finishing between segments; removes mica fins and bevels
sharp edges. This steel tool has a "V" cutter at one end and a "U" cutter
at the other end.

DYNAMOMETERS
The pressure exerted by the brushes determines electrical
and mechanical losses, the commutation quality, the
current distribution between brushes, brush wear and com-
mutator wear and consequently complete operation of the
machine.
For further information about brush pressure on the
commutator or the slip ring, refer to technical instructions
STA BE 16-27. It is important that the pressure exerted by
the brush holder pressure system should be checked regu-
larly, and that the pressure distribution on a single line of
brushes should be checked. A pressure dispersion induces
an unbalanced current between the brushes and therefore
variable wear between brushes. This increases the
frequency of maintenance operations. We can propose
renovation or replacement of your brush holders and an
entire range of pressure systems. Please refer to instructions
BE 25-F and BE 17-03 for further information about our
brush holder services.

Cleaning aerosol

ring/brush holder environment.
It does not damage winding insulation.
It is guaranteed to have no influence on the behavior of brushes.

ALARM BOX
Commutators and slip rings can be damaged by brushes
near their wear limit, regardless of their type (sealed
cables, solid cables or riveted). The alarm brush is provi-
ded with a small cross-section copper braid protected
over its complete length, by an insulating casing, in
addition to its sealed or riveted cable. This copper braid
i s e m b e d d e d m o r e d e e p l y t h a n t h e a n c h o r.
The free end of this braid is connected through an
appropriate connection to a sound or light warning circuit
that is closed by the brush on the commutator through two
relays. The track remains undamaged when the alarm
wire comes into contact with the commutator due to
brush wear.
This short circuit triggers the alarm.
