Q1). A small stream with a catchment area of 70 km2 was gauged at a location
some distance downstream of a reservoir. The data of the mean, monthly gauged
flow rainfall and upstream diversion are given. The regenerated flow reaching the
stream upstream of the gauging station can be assumed to be a constant value of
0.20 Mm3/month. Obtain the virgin flow that can be expected for a monthly
rainfall value.
Sol.)

∑P=86.6

∑R=38.76

∑P*R=375.019

∑P2=822.24 ; N=12
As we know that,

a= [N(∑P*R)- (∑P)*( ∑R)]/[(N(∑P2)-( ∑P)2)]

Now putting the values we get,

a=12*375.019-86.6*38.76/(12*822.24-38.762)

a=0.4828;

Similarly,

b=∑R-a*(∑p)/N
b=38.76-0.48*86.6/12

b=-0.2535

Hence the required annual rainfall runoff relationship of the catchment is given by

R=0.4828P-0.2535
When P=15.5 cm,

R=7.23 cm = 5.061Mm3 (Ans)

Q2). The hourly ordinates of a two –hour unit hydrograph are given below. Derive
a 6- hour unit hydrograph for the same catchment

Sol).
It should be clearly noted that ∑0 of the 6-hrs unit hydrograph so obtained should be the
same as ∑0 of the original 2-hrs unit hydrograph, so that each of the unit hydrograph
represent direct run off 1cm.
