Showing the importance of word stress and guessing the place of the stress:
Note for Stanley: The parts in parantheses have been translated into English. The original version is in
Turkish.
The place of the stress is predictable and there are certain rules governing the shifts in the place of the stress.
The first part of the book explains the importance of word stress
The second part of the book presents the IPA and explains it simply with examples from Turkish.
The third part
explains the sounds that
Turks have difficulty in
hearing and pronouncing;
the similarities and
differences between
certain sounds such as ‘w’
and ‘v’.
This part has the most importance in that it provides a lot of examples for each rule without expecting
learners to memorize them.
The fourth part of the book focuses on its main theme: Word stress
Affixes affecting/not affecting the stress; those receiving the stress on themselves have been
categorised and been provided with loads of examples.
The picture below exemplifies the part with a suffix that receives the stress before itself:
1. Homophones
2. Word stress in proper names (countries, regions, people’s names); word stress in numbers,
reflexive pronouns and so on.
3. Intonation: (yes/no questions and WH- questions; positive and negative sentences or Tag
questions
Correct word stress and knowledge of sounds enhance correct listening and speaking. The main aim
of the book is to overcome difficulties that Turkish learners of EFL face within this domain.
