CAMERON GATE VALVE LUBRICATION PRACTICES AND FITTINGS

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Cameron® gate valves for production and drilling applications are designed and manufactured in accordance
with API Specification 6A, and include provision for injecting body filler grease into the valve cavity. Certain
precautions should be taken when lubricating valves that are not isolated from well bore pressure. The
purpose of this bulletin is to clarify the design offered in regard to injection fittings and to reiterate standard
safety considerations for lubricating valves under field production conditions.

2.0 SCOPE

This bulletin applies to current standard Cameron 6A gate valves: Models FL™, FLS™, FLS-R™, M™, and
M215™, in both manually-actuated and power-actuated configurations. Also included in the scope are non-
current gate valve models, the Cameron F™ and FC™, McEvoy Models C™ and E-2™, and I-C™ 205™,
215™, 405™, and 315™.

3.0 INJECTION PORT AND FITTING DESIGN

3.1 Current Standard Designs

Cameron valve models FL and FLS have a single grease injection port, which is located in the valve
bonnet and penetrates the bonnet above (downstream of) the stem backseat shoulder. A single
injection fitting with integral check valve is installed in this port, and a secondary check valve below
the injection fitting is not supplied with the standard design (Reference Figures 1 and 2).

Cameron valve model FLS-R has two grease injection ports. One port is located in the valve bonnet
and penetrates the bonnet above (downstream of) the valve stem backseat shoulder while the other
port is located in the stuffing box and penetrates the stuffing box above (downstream of) the
balancing stem backseat shoulder. A single injection fitting with integral check valve is installed in
both ports, and a secondary check valve below the injection fitting is not supplied with the standard
design (Reference figures 3 and 4).

Cameron valve model M Pow-R-Seal™ and Saf-T-Seal™ include two injection ports located in the
valve body. These also use a single injection fitting with no secondary check valve (Reference Figure
5).

Finally, the Cameron valve model M215 has three grease injection ports located in the valve body.
These also use a single injection fitting with no secondary check valve (Reference Figure 6).

Non-current Designs

Cameron valve models F and FC are identical to the FL and FLS in regard to grease injection except
for working pressure ratings of 10,000, 15.000 and 20,000 psi, which include a secondary check valve
below the injection fitting.

McEvoy valve Models C and E-2 include one lubricant and two sealant injection fittings in the valve
body. These fittings do have secondary check valves below the injection fittings.

Ingram-Cactus valve models 205 and 215 are identical to the current models M and M215. Models
405 and 315 have the same grease port design as the current FL and FLS. None of the I-C valve
models were supplied as standard with a secondary check valve.

Table 1 summarizes the designs of Cameron gate valves.

W-K-M® model M-1™ has three grease injection ports located in the valve body. W-K-M valve
models M-2™ and M-3™ have a single injection fitting with no secondary check valve

3.2 Optional (Non-standard) Designs

An optional bonnet design, which incorporates a secondary check valve below the grease injection
fitting, is available on customer request for manually-actuated Cameron FL and FLS gate valves.

For actuated valves, Cameron Willis® or the outside actuator supplier must be consulted for
information on the availability of a secondary check valve for the grease injection fitting. (With some
models, it may not be physically possible to include a secondary check valve.)

For model M and M215 manual gate valves, a secondary check valve below the lubricant/sealant
injection fittings in the body is not available as an option.

4.0 OPERATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

Cameron gate valves can be lubricated with pressure in the valve, provided the grease pump can exceed the
internal pressure. However, Cameron recommends that wellhead and X-mas tree valves be isolated
from pressure prior to lubrication whenever possible.

4.1 Current Standard Design (No standard check valve)

If a valve must be lubricated under live pressure and flow conditions, extra care should be taken when
installing and removing the grease pump coupling on the injection fitting. The coupling should not be
over-tightened on the fitting. When the coupling is removed, the valve bonnet injection fitting must be
monitored to ensure it does not rotate with the coupling and back out of the bonnet. It is good practice
to hold the fitting with a wrench applied to the hex on the fitting body when connecting or removing
the pump coupling.

After lubrication, the grease fitting should be checked to ensure there is no leakage around the
threads or through the fitting. If the fitting requires replacement, refer to the appropriate Cameron
Operation and Maintenance Manual (see 5.0) for instructions.

4.2 Non-Standard Designs (with secondary check valve)

On Cameron F, FC, FL and FLS gate valves which are equipped with a secondary check valve below
the bonnet grease fitting, the bonnet flange is marked “CHECK” adjacent to the injection port.

Even if a gate valve has a secondary check valve, the precautions of 4.1 above should still be
observed. The check valve may not be properly seated and may not seal without leakage if the
grease fitting is removed. Even if the secondary check is sealing, there may be residual pressure
trapped between it and the grease fitting.

Special caution is required when backseating the stem or disassembling the bonnet on a valve that is
equipped with a secondary check valve. In order to check for pressure in the valve or to verify
backseat integrity, it is necessary to first sting the grease fitting open and monitor the fitting for
sustained escape of pressure or fluid. If none is apparent, the fitting must be removed and the
secondary check valve stung open as well. This requires a special tool, and it should be noted that the
depth of the check valve in the bonnet port will vary slightly from one valve to another.

Only after the secondary check valve is stung open and release of pressure or fluid has ceased,
should the valve be disassembled. Refer to the appropriate Cameron Operation and Maintenance
Manual (see 5.0) for instructions on backseating, verification, tool part numbers, and valve
disassembly.
