Assignment #1: Reaction Paper

Leverage: From Individual Curiosity to Community Development

A Reaction Paper for the Blog Article
“Im portance of Education Technology in teachi ng and learning! ” By Arvind Kesh

Creativity stems from a person’s curiosity and expression of individuality. This same individuality is
what starts discoveries and inventions that propel the nation and even the whole world to development.
However, critiques of Filipino schools have described how the country’s Educational system confine the human
spirit and is but a blind imitation of educational concepts and practices of highly developed Western countries.
They even describe our schools as agencies for perpetuating the status quo – preparing mere conformists
instead of original thinkers; discouraging empowerment and liberal thinking. True enough, in most cases, a
Filipino teacher sacrifices the nurturing of her students’ individuality to meet standardized expectations.
Teachers default into a buy in of the factory system – creating passive individuals who can only tread the paths
laid out for them instead of creating their own paths – and proliferating this same factory way of thinking in all
areas of our community lives. How can we break from the mold when we are ourselves were formed the same
way?

Educated by the very method that the Blog Article has poignantly described, teachers of today need a
full arsenal of tools that moves away from the Factory way of thinking and doing that stifles the very creativity
Education seeks to foster. With Educational technology readily available for teachers and students alike, it is
important that we use these tools to empower ourselves and our students not only in compliance of
Educational requirements but in promoting the expression of one’s creativity. Yes, we need to heed to
attainment of the national standards, but in achieving them, let us not be locked into a list of things to do.
Instead, as teachers, let us promote skills that exceed expectations by nourishing the active minds of the next
generation. Let us help them find their voice and speak their truths through ways and means most known to
them: technology and social media.

Most importantly, let us acknowledge and make use of this leverage that has freely landed in our laps.
Let us make these tools available to those whose voices are not heard, finding ways to connect them even in
their most remote locations. If we truly believe in fostering creativity through the tools technology provides us, it
is most important and most urgent that we make these tools accessible to all our students wherever they are
and whenever they need it because we strongly believe that they have the power to propel their curiosity to
learning, their learning to new creations, and their creations to community development.
