2. 1 - SIMPLE PRESENT
Verbos
allow ask cancel cause clean close complete copy dance deliver discover
enjoy finish install kidnap kill open paint plan plant play smoke
start stop study talk use visit want wash watch work
break bring build buy catch choose cut do drink drive eat find
forget give hold hurt leave make pay see sell send sing speak
I don’t like cofee.
1
Além disso, o simple present também é usado:
e) Para indicar o tempo futuro, especialmente quanto precedido por “if”, conjunções de tempo (when, while,
before, after, etc) ou quando referente a horários regulares de trens, ônibus ou voos.
I’ll be glad if it rains soon.
What are you going to do when you leave school?
The train arrives at 7.45.
May 1945: the war in Europe comes to an end.
At the end of the play both families realize that their hatred had caused the death of the lovers.
a (f).
1- I love chocolate.
2- The Earth revolves around the sun.
3- In 1831, Faraday discovers electromagnetic induction, the principle behind the electric transformer and
generator.
4- I walk to school every day.
5- I have a test next week.
6- All metals conduct electricity.
7- Our bus leaves at 10.35 pm.
Forma-se a estrutura negativa do simple present com a ajuda dos verbos auxiliaries DON’T (para I, you, we, they)
e DOESN’T (para he, she, it) seguido do verbo em sua forma base:
I don’t have a car.
The teacher doesn’t live in this city.
Forma-se a estrutura interrogativa do simple present com a ajuda dos verbos auxiliaries DO (para I, you, we,
they) e DOES (para he, she, it) seguido do sujeito e o verbo em sua forma base:
Do you think you can solve this problem?
Does this material conduct electricity?
O verbo to be é frequentemente utilizado no simple presente, porém é considerado
outros verbos no simple present:
VERB TO BE (afirmativa)
He We
I __am__ She ______ You _________
It They
Forma negativa → I am not (I’m not) / He is not (He isn’t) / We are not (We aren’t)
Forma interrogativa → Am I….? / Is she…. ? / Are they....?
2
Exemplos:
Dynamic electricity is the uniform motion of electrons through a conductor.
In insulating materials the outer electrons are not so free to move.
Are all metals electrically conductive?
O presente contínuo (present continuous) é um tempo verbal formado a partir da junção do verbo to be
Exemplos:
I am reading a book.
He’s writing a report.
They are building a new campus.
b) Ações/situações temporárias
I’m staying at a hotel until I find an apartment.
My sister is not working at the moment.
I’m learning English this semester.
d) Mudança ou desenvolvimento:
The weather is getting cold.
The social inequality is getting bigger and bigger.
More and more people are giving up smoking.
EXEMPLO:
This charge (static electricity) is stationary, and you won’t realize that energy is being stored.
Como você compreenderia essa frase em português?

2.4 -QUANTIFICADORES

Unidade 3
3.1 -A terminação –ING
Observe a figura:
verbal gerúndio do português.
the page" e "closing the book" e o fator que permite que isto ocorra é justamente a adição do “ing” a eles.
Então: Riding a bike is great! What “is great”? – “riding a bike” = Sujeito.
6
anteriormente, substantivo, infinitivo e adjetivo.
a) GERÚNDIO
Exemplos:
1- He is working hard on his project.
2- A: Hello, can I talk to Linda?
B: Sorry, she’s taking a shower.
3- C: What’s happening?
D: They are having a party.
b) SUBSTANTIVO
Exemplos:
1- Nursing is hard work, but it can be very fulfilling.
2- Lasers provide good quality printing.
3- It’s your turn to do the cleaning.
4- It was a blessing that no one was killed in the accident.
5- Bookings are still available for that flight.
c) INFINITIVO
Exemplos:
1- My grandfather stopped smoking last year.
2- She had difficulty in accepting his explanation.
3- Drinking and driving is dangerous.
OBSERVAÇÃO: A preposição BY foge à regra acima.
Nesses casos, a preposição BY
Exemplo:
He learned English by listening to the radio. (Ele aprendeu inglês ouvindo o rádio)
7
d) ADJETIVO
Exemplo:
1- That girl has a promising future.
2- Is there a shop round here that sells camping equipment?
3- I didn’t find the end of the film very convincing.
4- The doctor told me to change my eating and drinking habits.
Exercício:

3.3 -IMPERATIVO
IMPERATIVE
Verbo no infinitivo (+ complemento)
Exemplos:
Close the door.
Talk to me, please.
8
Don’t worry.
Do not lean out of the window.
Don’t be late.

4 -PASSADO SIMPLES
allow allowed open opened
ask asked paint painted
cancel cancelled plan planned
cause caused plant planted
clean cleaned play played
close closed smoke smoked
complete completed start started
copy copied stop stopped
dance danced study studied
deliver delivered talk talked
discover discovered use used
enjoy enjoyed visit visited
finish finished want wanted
haunt haunted wash washed
install installed watch watched
kidnap kidnapped work worked
kill killed
Exemplos:
12
4.2 - Verbos irregulares no Simple Past
break broke leave left
bring brought make made
build built pay paid
buy bought see saw
catch caught sell sold
choose chose send sent
cut cut sing sang
do did speak spoke
drink drank steal stole
drive drove take took
eat ate teach taught
find found tell told
forget forgot think thought
give gave understand understood
hold held win won
hurt hurt write wrote
Exemplos:
Faraday married Sarah Barnard (1800–1879) on 12 June 1821.They met through their families at the Sandemanian
church, and he confessed his faith to the Sandemanian congregation the month after they were married. They had
no children.
Albert Einstein kept a picture of Faraday on his study wall, alongside pictures of Isaac Newton and James Clerk
Maxwell.
As a school teacher, Ohm began his research with the new electrochemical cell, invented by Italian scientist
Alessandro Volta. Using equipment of his own creation, Ohm found that there is a direct proportionality between
the potential difference (voltage) applied across a conductor and the resultant electric current.
O verbo to be é considerado um verbo irregular. No simple past, portanto, ele possui formas distintas de acordo
com o sujeito que o acompanha. Veja:
b) Hábitos passados:
Every day I went to the park.
When I was a child we always went to the seaside in August.
c) Estados passados:
In those days, I didn’t like reading.
In the past, he felt much healthier than now.
Exemplos:
If I had the money now, I would buy a car.
Suppose we spent next week in Brighton?
Michael Faraday was born on 22 September 1791 in south London. His family was not
well off and Faraday received only a basic formal education. When he was 14, he was
apprenticed to a local bookbinder and during the next seven years, educated himself by
reading books on a wide range of scientific subjects. In 1812, Faraday attended four
lectures given by the chemist Humphry Davy at the Royal Institution. Faraday
subsequently wrote to Davy asking for a job as his assistant. Davy turned him down but
in 1813 appointed him to the job of chemical assistant at the Royal Institution.
A year later, Faraday was invited to accompany Davy and his wife on an 18 month European tour, taking
in France, Switzerland, Italy and Belgium and meeting many influential scientists. On their return in 1815,
Faraday continued to work at the Royal Institution, helping with experiments for Davy and other scientists.
In 1821 he published his work on electromagnetic rotation (the principle behind the electric motor). He was
able to carry out little further research in the 1820s, busy as he was with other projects. In 1826, he
founded the Royal Institution's Friday Evening Discourses and in the same year the Christmas Lectures,
both of which continue to this day. He himself gave many lectures, establishing his reputation as the
outstanding scientific lecturer of his time.
In 1831, Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction, the principle behind the electric transformer and
generator. This discovery was crucial in allowing electricity to be transformed from a curiosity into a
powerful new technology. During the remainder of the decade he worked on developing his ideas about
electricity. He was partly responsible for coining many familiar words including 'electrode', 'cathode' and
'ion'. Faraday's scientific knowledge was harnessed for practical use through various official appointments,
including scientific adviser to Trinity House (1836-1865) and Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Military
Academy in Woolwich (1830-1851).
However, in the early 1840s, Faraday's health began to deteriorate and he did less research. He died on
25 August 1867 at Hampton Court, where he had been given official lodgings in recognition of his
contribution to science. He gave his name to the 'farad', originally describing a unit of electrical charge but
later a unit of electrical capacitance.

1.5 – Simple Past: forma negativa
É formada com a ajuda do auxiliar DIDN’T + verbo principal (no infinitivo)
I didn’t go home earlier yesterday.
15
4.3 - VOZ PASSIVA
The form has to be signed.
English is spoken here.
Coke is drunk all over the world.
