 Philex Mining Corporation is a large-scale mining company that is located at Padcal,
Tuba, Benguet. It is a mechanized mining company that caters around employees that produces
Gold and Copper... A mining company has two main divisions: the Production and
Development. Mechanical Engineers are present in both operational groups.

During the first week of my training, I have learned that Mechanical Engineers are
considered as “Jack of all Trades” for we are needed in any industries built. Then the thought
came to me, “I am on the right track”. Other engineers are quite worried about the emerging
population among their respective specializations that turn into a battlefield. I am relieved that
Mechanical Engineers are versatile. It was an orientation week about Company Policies, Table of
Organization and Mine Ore Processes (Block Caving). I have learned that before, about 62 years
ago, mine ore processes especially ore extraction are manually done by the miners. And it was
around the 1960’s that mechanization was introduced in the mine site.

During the second week of our training, we were under the MCOHD (Mine Crushers and
Ore Handling Department). This section of the Mine Mechanical Group is in charge of the ore
handling or transportation from the Mine to Mill where the ore is being processed and turn into
final product, concentrate, containing % gold and % gold and is transported to Poro Point at San
Fernando, La Union where international transactions done. I had the chance to have an
underground tour specifically on the Feed Belt Conveyor (FBC) Circuits 1, 2, and 3. From
breaker stations, ore bodies are transported by conveyors and carried by set of rollers. Nava (the
Padcal mine’s layman’s term for Ore bodies) pass by crushers to set them into a desired smaller
sizes and is transferred to the Cable Hauled Conveyor (CHC) through apron feeders and chutes
in the loading station. CHC uses conveyor as well and is carried by Poly-Pulleys. This kind of
Pulley is made of Polyutherane material which can... The cables are pulled by a large driving
wheel about ... in diameter.

During the 3-day sections visit, I observed a lot of spillages around the circuit frames and
on the ground which is an alarming problem that causes delay in production. There are side
guards built on sides of the circuit frames and the Mine Engineering has come up with a
rehabilitation program where employees from surface development group enter underground to
shovel such spillages on Fridays. This had helped compensate the delay.
 I experienced cutting Bisplate BHN 500-540 cutting with oxygen-acetylene cutting outfit,
observed overhauling and repair of voith turbo used in Radicon Speed Reducer in Apron Feeders
at the MCOHD Rotables.

On our third week of training, we were forwarded to MMESD (Mine Mobile Equipment
Services Department) where they service LHD (Load Haul Dump) repairs. LHDs are one of the
main equipment used in production underground. It has 2 main parts: Load frame and Engine
frame. The Load frame contains the bucket, boom assembly, hoist and dump cylinder, swing
lever and dog bone. The Engine frame contains the engine itself which serves as a counterweight
