Flexi BTS platform:
Novel approach for GSM/EDGE/WCDMA/HSPA/WiMAX BTS sites

BTS configurations are built with weather-resistant

modules Example of 2+2+2
Capacity is expanded by TRX configuration
• Adding modules
• Software license keys
Same modules used for all site types
538mm
• Indoor and outdoor
• Micro- and macrocellular
• From 1 to 216 TRX configurations 560mm
Modules can be installed to walls, poles, stacks,
19”racks, Flexi BTS cabinets or in ‘swap-out’ 447mm
situations
Common Flexi platform brings modularity to
GSM/EDGE and WCDMA/HSPA BTS sites
Flexi family is the first BTS series to adopt the
novel modular approach

Differences compared to UltraSite EDGE BTS
Flexi EDGE BTS is based a the new Flexi BTS platform
• Modular BTS structure is based on 19” mechanics
• No cabinet is needed for a fully functional BTS
• No BTS back-plane to fix module positions: Ethernet based signaling between
modules
Flexi EDGE BTS has a different module design
• Dual TRX module with integrated Baseband and add-on duplex filter
• System module providing BTS O&M, transmission and power distribution
New BTS installation options
• Stack, wall and pole mounting
Flexi EDGE Dual TRX can be optimized either for Capacity or Double Power modes
• Capacity mode: both TRXs in the unit are used for capacity (bypass or combining
is used)
• Double Power transceiver (DPTRX): synchronized combining of TRX to one
antenna feeder to double the power

Flexi EDGE Dual TRX
The EXxA module is a Dual TX/RX unit. It is also known as a
DTRX – Dual TRX
It consists of:
• Two separate EDGE-capable transceivers
• Baseband for both transceivers
The receivers have a diversity channel, which can be
switched to either the ‘paired’ RX, or the RXDiv input
connector– see later block diagram
The EX_A has a place to mount one or two Wideband
Combiner sub-modules (EW_A and/or EW_B) for 2-way or 4-
way wideband combining, as well as for DP mode (EW_A
only)
Each transceiver in the EX_A module is activated by a licence

NSN Flexi WCDMA BTS structure overview
Flexi BTS introduces a new platform
• The modular design doesn’t use any backplanes
• Modules are interconnected through front panel cabling
• Modules can be installed separate from each other (Feederless / Distributed
Sites)
A Flexi WCDMA BTS consists of one System Module and
• one optional Extension System Module (BaseBand Extension)
There can be up to three Radio Modules or Remote Radio Heads
• Radio Modules are available with 1, 2 or 3 Power Amplifiers (PAs) each
– each PA contains one dual carrier
• Remote Radio Heads are optimized for 1 sector with
– 1 PA with 2 (later 3) carriers
BTS configurations
• 1+0+0 over 2+2+2 to 2+2+2+2+2+2 / 4+4+4
• Module weight: 19-25 kg per Module
The Base Station can be installed by one person

Baseband Extension for Flexi WCDMA BTS

• BTS capacity can be upgraded by adding a second System Module

• When the System Module is used as a System Extension Module operating in a
baseband extension mode, a transmission sub-module is not installed. Instead,
a dummy transmission sub-module is installed to provide IP55 protection. This
item is also included in Flexi System Extension Kit (FSKA)
• The only connectors that can be used are the DC input terminal and the two
optical EXT interfaces connected to the System Module
• Synchronisation is provided by the System Module
• No commissioning required to integrate FSKA to System Module. FSKA will
detected automatically
• The auto detection requires that (the same) WN3.3 or later BTS SW exists and
is active both in the System Module and System Extension Module. However,
support for the FSMC and FSMD is first introduced in WN5.0.
• The initial SW upgrade of the Extension System Module is to be done “stand-
alone” and requires a (spare) FTM equipped.
• Rel. 2 System Modules can be used in any combination
• Rel. 1 System Module (FSMB) can NOT act as an Extension for a Rel. 2 System

RF Module features

The RF Module is a stand-alone fully operational transceiver module with integrated antenna
filters. The RF Module is able to support up to three sectors in a Flexi WCDMA base station.
Radio-related signal processing is performed in the RF Module. It hosts the RF functionality, and
also provides power supply and control for MHAs as well as for antenna RealTilt.
The RF Module has integrated fans and Bias-Ts.

The RF Module can support one to three sectors with the following integrated components:
• Transceivers with TX for two adjacent carriers (three transceivers in the Triple RF Module, two in the Dual
and one
in the Single RF Module)
• Transceivers with RX for two adjacent carriers with diversity (three transceivers in the Triple RF Module, two
in the
Dual and one in the Single RF Module)
• Linear power amplifiers (three in the Triple RF Module, two in the Dual and one in the Single RF Module)
• RF filters with main and div branch (three in the Triple RF Module, two in the Dual and one in the Single RF
Module)
• 48 VDC input power supply
• Masthead amplifier and 3GPP Antenna Tilt power feed and control for up to three sectors
• Interface to the System Module
• Interface for chaining System Modules (Triple RF Module only)
• Integrated fan assembly (two fans)
• Full operational bandwidth support
• Antenna connector interfaces
