Course Information

Prerequisite: Algebra 1 and Geometry

This course is designed to continue and expand the concepts from Algebra 1 as well as introduce new
ideas in preparation for the more advanced courses. The structure of the systems of real and complex
numbers is stressed, and problem solving is continued. Topics include properties of real numbers, linear
and quadratic functions, polynomials and rational expressions, quadratic equations, complex numbers,
exponential functions, inverse functions, Trigonometry and sequences and series.

Classroom Materials

It is the responsibility of each student to be prepared for class. The following is a list of supplies needed
throughout the school year. Required items are identified with an asterisk.

- Pencils *
- Loose leaf Paper *
- 2 One Subject Spiral Notebooks
- TI 83 or 84 Calculator REQUIRED *
(one for each semester) *
- Glue Sticks, Scissors, Colored Pencils
- 3 Ring Binder or Folder for loose - Textbook (Does NOT need to be brought
papers, tests and quizzes * everyday) *

All supplies need to be brought to class everyday in order to be the most successful you can be. We will
use the spiral notebooks almost everyday for interactive notetaking. Also ALL work must be done in
pencil; work done in pen will not be graded and will need to be redone.

Tardiness

Students are required to be inside the classroom, and seated in their assigned desk, within 5 minutes of
leaving their previous destination. If for some reason students are not able to make it to class on time,
they must provide a signed pass (will be kept for documentation purposes). Two tardies will result in
demerits/lunch detention.
Grading
15% Homework/Classwork
***In order to get full credit, all work must be shown and all problems should be attempted to the best of
your ability. Failure to do so will result in having to redo the assignment and reduced credit.
30% Quizzes/Weekly Checkpoints
55% Tests/Projects
***Students will receive one opportunity per quarter to do test corrections. Corrections may be done on
any test throughout the quarter and must be done during tutorial/discovery with Mrs. Walker in order to
count. Half credit will be awarded for the problems done correctly the second time. Study guides are
given before every test and should be done multiple times to ensure mastery prior to the test.

Make-up or Missed Work

If student is absent, then it is the student’s responsibility to obtain any missed handouts by checking the
make-up crate/folder. Students need to make-up work as quickly as possible in order to not further the
learning gap and to ensure that they are ready for all upcoming tests and quizzes. If you are absent on
the day of a test, you will make-up the test during a discovery period when you return. If you wish to re-
test, because of a failing grade, it is your responsibility to notify the teacher as soon as possible.

Passes
Any student stepping out of the classroom during instructional time is required to sign-out for
documentation purposes. Sign-out form will be on my desk by the door. Students should sign back in
when they return to class.

Restroom Pass
Students will be allowed to leave the classroom if they need to go to the restroom. However,
students will not be allowed to leave the classroom during direct instructional time (while I’m
teaching). If there are any health issues that require a student to go to the restroom frequently,
parents should notify me as soon as possible.

Office (Nurse) Pass

Students will be allowed to leave the classroom for documented medical reasons or emergencies.

Other Passes
Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom if the purpose is to visit another teacher,
student, or to pick up forgotten materials left someplace else. Math instruction takes priority.

Classroom Management

Expectations:
(1) The consumption of food and/or drinks is not allowed inside the classroom.
(2) Please respect everyone in class and their property.
(3) You must come prepared to class with required materials.
(4) The disruption of classroom instruction will not be tolerated.
(5) Be on time!
(6) Always be willing to try; have a positive attitude.

Consequences:
(1) Demerits
(2) Parental Contact for continued infractions.

Cell Phones and Computers

Students must turn in their cell phones to the appropriate numbered slot (on the back of the door) upon
entering the classroom. If they are not turned in and you are caught with one, it will be turned into the
main office and cannot be picked up until the end of the day. Computers should ONLY be out upon
teacher request.
How to Help Your Child Succeed in Math Class

1. Make sure your child is studying each day’s notes or completing the homework
assignment. Please check for completeness. 30 minutes of math everyday.

2. Encourage your child to read the textbook, make notes as necessary, and study its
examples. There are also very good instructional videos online at
www.khanacademy.org and www.mathvids.com and www.youtube.com in case they
are absent or just want to have the material presented again.

3. Help your child to ask questions in class, on the forum, and in tutorials. “I don’t
understand this!” is NOT a question. “Can you help me see where I made a mistake in
working problem #3?” is something we can work with.

4. If your child is having difficulty, encourage him or her to come in for tutorials.

5. Have your child teach the current (or old) material to you. If they can teach it to
someone, then it shows that they have mastered the material!

6. Help your child to organize his or her time and prioritize tasks.

7. Encourage your child to persevere in spite of challenges. This might be the first course
in which your child really has to struggle to master the material. Remember that it’s
better to learn how to struggle now than when they are off by themselves in college.

8. Please contact me right away with any concerns you might have about your child’s
performance. My preferred method of communication is via email. My email address is
danawalker@trinityes.org.

I work very hard to help all students master the concepts and skills of Algebra. Student success
will depend on many factors, including previous math knowledge and personal motivation. With
all of us working together, we can help to ensure that your child has the best possible learning
experience.

We have read and understood the Algebra Course Syllabus.
