by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference
of fractions with like denominators.
● ISTE 3. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources.

● Students will use the listed websites as resources to research addition and subtraction fractions. Microsoft
PowerPoint will be used to create a presentation that includes a Comic showing how to add and subtract fractions.
Students will email their finished product to my email for grading. Sample is at the end of this document.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

● What are the processes to adding and subtracting fractions.
● Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
● This lesson continues the basic skills of addition and subtraction.
● Subsequent lessons will involve multiplying and dividing fractions.
● I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for
those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of
this particular lesson.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
● Introduction: You are a part of a team. Your team will present the processes of adding and subtracting
fractions. Your team will be learning how to complete addition and subtraction of fractions. Your team
will research the steps (given websites) and create a PowerPoint containing steps of addition and
subtraction of fractions and a comic strip about how to complete the problems. You should have a title
slide, slide(s) for the steps, and a reference slide for the website you used. Your team will then present
the PowerPoint with the information to the class. After the presentations, you will complete two
worksheets by yourself.

● Procedures:

● Prior to the computer

1. The teacher will divide the students into teams of 4-5 students and distribute the textbook
resources. (5 minutes)
● At the computer
1. The teacher will have the above sites bookmarked on the student’s computers.
2. In teams the students will research the bookmarked websites to complete their PowerPoints and
ToonDoos. (30 minutes)
● After the computer
1. The students will present their finished PowerPoints to the class. (25 minutes)

● Closure: After the presentations the students will vote on which comic was their favorite and most
informative.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
● Students will submit and present their PowerPoint. The students will also complete Adding Fractions
Worksheet and Subtracting Fractions Worksheet with at least 85% accuracy on both.
● Each member of the team will receive the same score for the PowerPoint using the following rubric.
