Egypt
Joseph was sold by his brothers - he
was bought by Midianite merchants
who took him to Egypt.
- God blessed Joseph.
- although he suffered at the same time.
- Miraculously Jospeh was brought
before Pharaoh to interpret his dreams.
- The result was Joseph was rapidly
promoted to second in command of all
Egypt.
- Through Jospeh’s wisdom (given to
him by God) Egypt survived the famine
and Pharaoh prospered.
The famine didn’t only affect Egypt but
the surrounding nations. Joseph’s family
in Israel heard there was grain in Egypt
and came to buy some.
Gen 50:19-20 shows the maturity and
understanding into which the previously
brattish / proud Joseph had grown,
But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear,
for ham I in the place of God? 20 As
for you, you meant evil against me,
but God meant it for good, to bring it
about that many people should be
kept alive, as they are today.

Israel
The Promised Land

Egypt
At first Israel’s time in Egypt was peaceful
and friendly but by the beginning of the
book of Exodus we see that things had
changed dramatically. Now the Egyptians
feared the numerous Israelites might side
with any opponents in the event of war,
Exodus 1:8, 9,
Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who
did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his
people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too
many and too mighty for us. 10 gCome, let us
deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply,
and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies
and fight against us and escape from the
land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over
them to afflict them with heavy burdens.
God sent Moses:
- to act as his spokesman,
- to reassure Israel of his love and
concern for them to be free.
Many signs and miracles took place as
God worked on behalf of the Israelites
to see Egypt set them free.
The only problem was that due to the
rebellious nature of the Israelites, what
was meant to be a short and quick
journey. ended up taking 40 years!
As Israel lives in the land God promised
we see the development of a national
identity, the establishment of a kingship
and the division into the people of God
into two kingdoms, Israel (northern) and
Judah (southern).
Common Cycle for Each of the Judges
Rehoboam refused to
reduce taxes - the
people rebel, and the
10 northern tribes
revolted and set up
Jeroboam as their king.
The northern
kingdom would now
be known as Israel
and the southern
kingdom as Judah.
