Story of M Karunanidhi, leader of Dravidian Movement

Muthuvel Karunanidhi

Muthuvel Karunanidhi (born as Daksinamoorthy on 3 June 1924) is an

Indian politician and the 3rd Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He is the
President of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a political party based in Tamil
Nadu. He became Chief Minister for the first time in 1969. On 13 May 2006,
he became the Chief Minister for the fifth time. He is also known for his
writing works in the Tamil film industry. During the Thooku Medai play, M.
R. Radha gave him the title of Kalaignar.

Born in Thirukkuvalai village in Nagapattinam district, he was born as a son

of Muthuvelu and Anju. His original name is Dakshinamurthy and he has
Telugu ancestry. Karunanidhi was more interested in drama, poetry, and
literature during his school season. Karunanidhi, who was inspired by the
speaker Azhagirisamy, considered the pillar of the Justice Party,
completely engaged in social movements at his 14th age. With the help of
some of his students in the field of youth, the "youth revitalized the
organization". The organization helped young people develop their
inspiration and writing. After some time, the state was formed as a state-
level "All Students Club." This was the first student division of the Dravidian
movement. Karunanidhi also engaged the student community in social
work with other members. DMK The party's official newspaper, Murasoli,
started developing a newspaper for its members. The first major opposition
to Karunanidhi's support for Tamil politics involved in the Kallukudi
demonstration (1953). The original name of this industrial city is Kallagudi.
Dalmiya, which set up a cement plant is from North India and changed the
original name Kallakkudi to Dalmiyapuram. DMK opposed the name
change as it was seen as North Indian oppression of Tamil Nadu.
Karunanidhi and his comrades posted papers on the name
"Dalmiyaapuram" in the railway station name board and block the passage
of the trains. Two people died in the demonstration by the police action and
Karunanidhi was arrested.

Karunanidhi began his career as a screenwriter in the Tamil film industry.

Through his wit and oratorical skills he rapidly rose as a popular politician.
He was famous for writing historical and social (reformist) stories which
propagated the socialist and rationalist ideals of the Dravidian movement to
which he belonged. He first began using Tamil cinema to propagate his
political ideas through the movie Parasakthi. Parasakthi was a turning
point in Tamil cinema, as it espoused the ideologies of the Dravidian
movement and also introduced two prominent actors of Tamil filmdom,
Sivaji Ganesan and S. S. Rajendran. The movie was initially banned but
was eventually released in 1952. It was a huge box office hit, but its release
was marred with controversies. The movie was opposed by orthodox
Hindus since it contained elements that criticized Brahmanism. Two other
movies written by Karunanidhi that contained such messages were Panam
and Thangarathnam. These movies contained themes such as widow
remarriage, abolition of untouchability, self-respect marriages, abolition of
zamindari and abolition of religious hypocrisy. As his movies and plays with
strong social messages became popular, they suffered from increased
censorship; two of his plays in the 1950s were banned.

Karunanidhi rose to fame as a scriptwriter for the Modern Theatres Studio

in Salem about 350 kilometers from Madras or present day Chennai. T R
Sundaram, the owner of Modern Theatres Studio at Yercaud foot hills, was
instrumental in honouring the talents of Karunanidhi, Jayalalithaa and M G
Ramachandran.

Karunanidhi is known for his contributions to Tamil literature. His

contributions cover a wide range: poems, letters, screenplays, novels,
biographies, historical novels, stage-plays, dialogues and movie songs. He
has written Kuraloviam for Thirukural, Tholkaappiya Poonga, Poombukar,
as well as many poems, essays and books. Apart from literature,
Karunanidhi has also contributed to the Tamil language through art and
architecture. Like the Kuraloviyam, in which Kalaignar wrote about
Thirukkural, through the construction of Valluvar Kottam he gave an
architectural presence to Thiruvalluvar, in Chennai. At Kanyakumari,
Karunanidhi constructed a 133-foot-high statue of Thiruvalluvar in honour
of the scholar.

Chennai: July 27 2018. Ailing DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi was shifted to
a Chennai hospital past midnight, hours after his son MK Stalin issued a
statement that there is an improvement in his health and urged party
workers not to believe rumours being spread by miscreants.

His family said the 94-year-old veteran politician's condition suddenly

declined later in the evening due to blood pressure issues. His entire family
including sons MK Stalin and MK Alagiri, daughter M Kanimozhi and top
DMK leaders rushed back to the house and decided to move him to the
hospital.

Former union minister A Raja later told reporters that Mr. Karunanidhi is
"out of danger".

A health bulletin by the hospital at 2.30 am said the former Tamil Nadu
chief minister was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at 1.30 am after
"following drop in blood pressure".

"His blood pressure has stabilised with medical management and he

continues to be monitored and treated by a panel of expert doctors," the
hospital's executive director Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj said.

In a statement earlier in the evening, Mr. Stalin had spoken about an

improvement in his father's health and appealed to party workers not
to come over to visit him. But his appeals could not convince scores of

his supporters, who had gathered near the DMK leader's Gopalapuram
house, to budge.
Hundreds of Mr. Karunanidhi's supporters later reached Kauvery Hospital
about 2 km away as word spread about his condition had spread and have
been camping outside amid heavy deployment of police personnel.

Mr. Karunanidhi, who is addressed as 'Kalaignar' (artiste) by his

supporters, followers and some politicians, entered his 50th year as party
chief yesterday.

The DMK patriarch had returned home recently after a short stay at
Kauvery hospital where he underwent a procedure to change his
tracheostomy tube to help him breathe better. Doctors had said he is being
provided hospital-level care at home.

Mr. Karunanidhi, who has served as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister five times,
has been recovering from a long illness for more than a year and is rarely
seen in public. He has been tube-fed for some time.

But he recently contracted a urinary tract infection, leading to a decline in

his condition. On Friday, the family had said there were signs of
improvement with the fever and infection subsiding.

Since yesterday, a stream of politicians has been visiting the DMK chief to
enquire about his health. On Thursday, President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi spoke to his
son MK Stalin and daughter Kanimozhi, both DMK leaders, to ask about his
health, and offered all help. Later in the evening, BJP leaders and
superstar Rajinikanth also called on the family.

“Karunanidhi’s health condition has improved a lot as compared to last

week. He is able to listen to what we are saying. He has overcome the
critical period and his health parameters are improving. He will return to
home within two or three days,” Duraimurugan, a senior party leader, told
media.

Karunanidhi was admitted to Chennai’s Kauvery Hospital on July 28 after

his health deteriorated. Kalaignar, as the DMK chief is popularly known,
had recently undergone a tracheotomy to enhance the functioning of his
lungs and has been suffering from geriatric complaints.

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi’s medical condition has

declined, the hospital treating him in Chennai said on Monday,6, August-
2018.
Maintaining Karunanidhi’s vital organs “continues to be a challenge”
because of age-related ailments, said Kauvery Hospital in a statement. The
DMK chief’s response to “medical interventions over the next 24 hours” will
determine his prognosis,” it said.
According to Kauvery hospital sources, Karunanidhi’s pulse and blood
pressure, which touched critical levels at the time of admission, had
witnessed improvement, but slipped by Monday noon. There are infections
in the chest region and this also poses the complication for the medical
team treating him in the intensive care unit, the sources told HT.

6.10 pm- evening on 7th August: Passed away. Seven days mourning in
Tamil nadu.
