BLOCK INTRODUCTION

Information is the driving force for any business. Management must take
decisions that directly influence the goals of business organisations. The rapid
emergence of MIS in organisations during the last one and half decades, has
created an intense demand for well trained, capable MIS managers to plan,
organise, direct and control the powerful technology of computer based
information system. MIS managers are required to know the systems approach
to management, coupled with the ability to participate in design and utilisation of
the computer based information system.

Management information systems, if properly defined and understood has


untapped potential for business, industry and the government. It may indeed
prove to be the only way to maintain a competitive industry posture as
information is realized as the fourth major resource.

Businesses that effectively use information to manage and impact decision


making will have an excellent competitive advantage in the market.

This book is divided into 5 units :

Unit 1 covers management information system in good detail.

Unit 2 mainly deals with information, data and the database concepts.

Unit 3 covers decision making in organisations.

Unit 4 discusses the system analysis and design of information systems in


general.

Unit 5 brings out management information systems in use, in different functional


areas of business.
