    Working with Tugs Training Course

    Case study

    A small tug was towing a barge at the approaches to a pier off the west coast of Ireland. The crew of the
    tug had used an old car tyre to join two lengths of rope to form a longer towline. During the tow, the tug
    accelerated, causing the towline to part where it was tied to the tyre. The part of the line still attached to
    the tyre whiplashed back towards the barge, where it struck and killed the crew member standing at its
    bow.
