2.2 Structural form

Overview of the structural form
The basic framework of the low-voltage switch cabinet structure features combined
assembly. The cabinet blanking plate is made of high-quality cold-rolled steel plate. All
frames, inner partition plates and functional units are made of high-quality imported
aluminum-zinc-coated steel plate. During the processing and shearing, the aluminum-zinc
coating can automatically cover the sheared edge with the shear knife, so the sheared
edge has strong self-healing ability and won’t be subject to corrosion or rusting. The
remaining structural metal parts of the cabinet, which is made of the cold-rolled plate, are
galvanized for corrosion prevention.
The low-voltage switch cabinet is assembled by C type upright column secured by steel
self- tapping screws and bolts. It has enough mechanical strength to ensure no shaking or
distortion after component installation and upon operation. Each switch cabinet is
separated into three compartments inside, namely, the horizontal bus compartment,
functional unit compartment and cable compartment. An aluminum-zinc-coated plate is
used to separate between the compartments.
MNS is based on 8E (E=25mm), and its functional units are 8E/4, 8E/2, 6E, 8E, 12E,
16E, 24E, 32E, and 72E. One MCC cabinet can be equipped with up to 36 functional
units, and the assembly with combination of PC with MCC is allowed.
3. Foundation and on-site installation
In order to ensure the best installation procedure and quality, specially trained or full-time
personnel shall be in charge of guidance and supervision in the field and conduct relevant
operation in accordance with the requirements of the operation manual.
3.1 General requirements for installation site
Before installation of the switch cabinet, the civil works for the power distribution room
must be completed and accepted, and equipped with lighting and the power supply and
ventilation devices for installation. The power distribution room should be dry, tidy and
air-ventilated, and its door can be locked. In addition, the wall-through holes and cable
trench are well prepared in advance. The ceiling height of the power distribution room
should not be less than 3000mm. Conditions of all power distribution rooms must be
guaranteed to meet the normal operating conditions of the specified indoor switch
cabinet.
3.2 Installation of the switch cabinet
After the installation conditions are available, the installation of the switch cabinet can be
started. It must be noted that the installation of the switch cabinet must be done by
installation personnel with installation qualifications to avoid any possible problems.
-- Move the switch cabinet to the position for installation in the order given by the layout
drawing.
-- Wipe the bus with a piece of clean, dry and soft cloth to remove grease and adhering
dirt. If the cabinet is dirty, it should be cleaned in the same way before installation.
- Accurately adjust the position and verticality of the switch cabinet on a unit-by-unit
basis on the foundation (the edge of the front of the switch cabinet must not deviate from
the vertical line by more than 2mm). During adjustment of the position of the switch
cabinet, it’s needed to insert the main bus and the grounding bus of the switch cabinet into
the connection position nearby the cabinet. If there are more than 10 switch cabinets, it is
best to install and adjust them from the middle.
-- Connect the switch cabinets together with bolts.
-- After all the switch cabinets are assembled, they shall be fixed to the foundation with
anchor bolts or welded to the basic channel steel.
-- After the switch cabinet is assembled, connect the main bus and the grounding bus with
the bolts attached to the switch cabinet.
-- Connect the main and grounding buses to the grounding grid of the power distribution
room.

3.3 Installation of power and control cables

The connection of the cable must be carried out according to the construction
requirements in cable construction areas. Refer to the following procedures for routine
operation.
-- Open the switch cabinet cable compartment door (the rear door where an outgoing line
at the rear part is arranged, or the side door where an outgoing line is arranged at the side
part).
-- Introduce a power cable and strip it at a predetermined length.
-- Make cable terminations as required by the manufacturer.
-- Pass the cable through the bottom panel of the switch cabinet, connect it to the cable
terminal of the circuit breaker or functional unit in the cabinet, and secure the cable on the
cable bracket.
-- Block the gap according to the construction requirements of each place to prevent small
animals from entering the cabinet.
-- For the control cable between the cabinets, connection is made through the cable trough
over the control room.
3.4 Ending of the installation
-- Check whether the bolt connections are tight or not, especially those by the bus and
grounding system bolts installed in the field.
-- Carefully clean the inside and the enclosure of the switch cabinet.
-- Carefully check whether there are any remaining items such as tools and bolts left in
the switch cabinet.
4. Cabinet operation
4.1 Preparation before startup
Before poweron, the following work shall be done:
-- Check the overall situation of the switch cabinet, find out the various hazards, and
confirm that such hazards have been completely eliminated.
-- Check whether the switch cabinet is installed correctly and whether the busbar
connection is reliable.
-- Manually check whether the operation of the circuit breakers and the functional units
are flexible, and whether the interlocking devices of the functional units are correct and
reliable.
-- Check whether the connection between the main grounding bus and the grounding
conductor of the substation outside the cabinet is reliable, and clean the grounding busbar
surface. The grounding circuit contact resistance should be no more than 1000
microohms.
-- Check whether the cable connections are reliable.
-- Remove all remaining materials, irrelevant objects and tools inside the cabinet.
-- Wipe the cabinet and the sealing strips at the inside of the cabinet door with a piece of
soft cloth that is clean, dry, and well-knit. Wipe off adhering dust and grease.
-- Close all cabinet doors that were opened during installation.
-- Familiar with and master the operation of circuit breakers, MCC drawers, etc.
-- Test the insulation resistance and pressure resistance of the switch cabinet according to
the requirements of national standards.
4.2 Startup
-- Observe the relevant safety regulations.
-- Leave all switches in the cabinet in OFF position. Place all manual/automatic transfer
switches in the manual position.
-- Remove the grounding wires and short-circuited wires from the hazardous work area.
-- Power on the switch cabinet according to the normal procedure or power transmission
scheme, and observe the instruments, signals and indicators.
-- For the main components such as the circuit breaker/contactor, check their operational
performance by 5 opening/closing cycles.
-- Check whether the control circuit is normal.
-- Perform other measurements and inspections as required and check all functions.
-- Pay attention to any abnormal conditions.
4.3 Cabinet operation
Attention:
All operations shall be carried out when the door of the switch cabinet is closed,
unless otherwise noted.
In case of particularly large resistance, it may be that the corresponding interlocking
has blocked the operation that needs to be performed. At this point, stop the
operation and carefully check the operating procedures for errors.
4.3.1 Operation of PC cabinet (frame-type circuit breaker)
4.3.1.1 Frame-type circuit breaker movement
Skip this section if you are configuring a fixed circuit breaker.
If a drawout circuit breaker is configured, the circuit breaker will have the operation and
test/disconnection positions. Using the operating handle provided with this circuit breaker
makes it possible to make the circuit breaker shift between the operating and
test/disconnection positions. Normally, when the circuit breaker is opened, insert the
handle into the operating hole, and rotate the handle to make the circuit breaker shift.
When shifting to the desired position, take off the handle.
Please refer to the operating manual of the circuit breaker for detailed operating
instructions and requirements.
4.3.1.2 Opening/closing of the frame-type circuit breaker
The frame type circuit breaker usually has two types of mechanisms: manual operation
and electric operation. For electrically operated circuit breakers, they also generally have
manual operation functions.
When operating manually, use the energy storage handle of the circuit breaker to operate
repeatedly to store energy and pay attention to whether the stored energy is sufficient.
After the energy storage is completed, the circuit breaker can be closed by electric or
mechanical button; when the electric operation is performed, the energy storage of the
circuit breaker is automatically completed by the circuit breaker, and no manual operation
is required. The opening of the circuit breaker is also usually enabled by electric or
mechanical buttons.
Please refer to the operating manual of the circuit breaker for detailed operating
instructions and requirements.
4.3.2 Operation of the drawer-type switch cabinet
4.3.2.1 Operation of 8E/4 and 8E/2 drawer units
The operation of the 8E/4 and 8E/2 drawer units is achieved by a handle switch mounted
on the instrument panel, which has five positions, with each designed to be electrically
and mechanically interlocked. Turn the handle to operate the drawer unit accordingly. The
operating handle can be equipped with padlocks (up to three) to prevent the drawer from
being inserted / withdrawn or the switch from being closed accidentally.
The function of each location is stated as follows:

cabinet correctly to push it into the cabinet. When inserting the drawer, you should apply
the force in a steady and proper way, and ensure to push the drawer after inserting it on
the guide rail correctly so as not to damage the drawer unit or cause malfunction.
⑤ Test and isolation
When the operating handle is rotated to the test position, the main switch will be opened,
and the control circuit be connected. At this time, perform the operations like the closing
test for the contactors of the circuit to prevent load from being charged; when the
operating handle is rotated to the isolated position, the main switch and the secondary
circuits are disconnected and isolated by 30mm.
4.3.2.2 Operation for 8E, 16E and 24E drawer units
Different from the 8E/4 and 8E/2 drawer units, the 8E, 16E and 24E drawer units have the
drawer whose operating handle is separated from the main switch handle. The operating
handle has four positions, with each designed to be electrically and mechanically
interlocked. Turn the handle to operate the drawer unit accordingly. The operating handle
can be equipped with padlocks (up to three) to prevent the drawer from being
inserted/withdrawn or the switch from being closed accidentally.

position, then, align the handle with the guide rail in the cabinet, and make its front end
slightly inclined downwards to push the drawer into the cabinet. After inserting the
drawer into the guide rail, lift the drawer and push it inward smoothly. When inserting the
drawer, you should apply the force in a steady and proper way, and ensure to push the
drawer after inserting it on the guide rail correctly so as not to damage the drawer unit or
cause malfunction.
⑤ Test and isolation
When the main switch is in the off-position, and when the drawer operating handle is
rotated to the test position, the main switch will be opened, and the control circuit be
connected. At this time, perform the operations like the closing test for the contactors of
the circuit to prevent load from being charged; when the operating handle is rotated to the
isolated position, the main switch and the secondary circuits are disconnected and isolated
by 45mm.
⑥Reclosing after main switch trip
When the main switch trips, the main switch handle will automatically switch to the
"TRIP" position. Upon reclosing after check and maintenance, the main switch handle
must be turned counterclockwise to the "RESET" position. At this time, the main switch
completes the "RESET" operation. After the handle is released, the main switch returns to
the off-position for reclosing or other operations.
⑦ Emergency unlocking of the drawer unit
At the lower right side of the door panel of the drawer unit, there is an emergency
unlocking hole covered with a small plastic lid (see Figure 4.3.2.2). If the door can’t be
opened due to improper operation or unexpected failure, pull out the plastic lid, put a
small iron rod (Ø3) or a small screwdriver into the unlocking hole, press down on a
mechanical locking plate to open the door, and use a wrench to adjust the interlocking
mechanism to the withdrawing/inserting position to pull out the drawer for inspection or
maintenance. Be sure to cover the hole with the plastic lid after repairing and closing the
door, otherwise the original protection grade will be compromised.

4.3.3 Operation of the horizontal knife fuse unit

The SR series horizontal knife fuse unit adopts a modular, compact structure for
convenient use. Depending on different currents and functions, the unit has different
heights available in 2E, 4E and 8E versions. The operations for the unit with such three
height versions are exactly the same. The horizontal knife fuse unit generally has a fuse
handle and a lateral movement operating handle, and replacing the fuse or
closing/opening the switch can be completed by operating the corresponding handle. The
handle is designed to be electrically and mechanically interlocked to avoid misoperation.
When the lateral movement opening and closing handle is disconnected, the handle may
be equipped with a padlock to avoid accidents caused by closing the switch in a wrong
way.
① Opening and closing of the horizontal knife fuse unit
The SR switch with the operating mechanism is equipped with a lateral movement
operating handle that can be operated to open and close the switch. The handle moves at
an angle of approximately 45 º during operation. The operating handle can be folded in
both the on and off positions. After the operation, the handle should be folded to avoid
accidents or damage to the handle. See Figure 4.3.3.1.

Operating the main switch handle makes it possible to open and close the main switch.
When closing the switch, turn the main switch handle from the “O” position to the “I”
position. After rotating the handle in place, release the handle to close the main switch;
when opening the switch, turn the main switch handle from the “I” position to the “O”
position. After rotating the handle in place, release the handle to open the main switch;
② Reclosing after main switch trip
When the main switch trips, the main switch handle will automatically switch to the
"TRIP" position. Upon reclosing after check and maintenance, the main switch handle
must be turned counterclockwise to the "RESET" position. At this time, the main switch
completes the "RESET" operation. After the handle is released, the main switch returns to
the off-position for reclosing or other operations.
③ Replacement of plug-in unit main switch
The main switch of the plug-in unit consists of two parts: a fixed part that is directly
mounted to the base and a switch body that is equipped with a plug-in isolated contact.
When the main switch needs to be inspected for repair, pull out the switch as follows
(refer to Figure 4.3.4):

Figure 4.3.4 Replacement of the plug-in switch

-- Make sure that the switch is in the off-state. When the switch is in the on-state, the
removable body is locked by the interlock device to avoid failure arising from accidental
unplugging.
-- Loosen the fixed screws on the top and bottom of the removable switch body.
-- Hold the switch with both hands and apply force smoothly outward to unplug the
switch body. When unplugging the switch body, be careful not to forcibly shake it left and
right to avoid damaging the switch or the base.
The reverse operation of the above operation sequence allows the switch to be inserted
into the fixed portion of the base.
5. Maintenance
There is little workload for maintenance of MNS switch cabinet. However, the
maintenance work can keep the switch cabinet flexible and reliable, so that it can last as
long as possible. Maintenance work can only be carried out by well-trained dedicated
personnel. As required by a user, maintenance can be performed by our professionals.
