THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

1.3 Statement of the ProblemThis study aims to determine the perceptions of the

English Majors of Philippine Normal University-Mindanao on the Reportorial Activities

in enhancing their communication skills. Specifically, it sought to answer the following

questions:

1. What is the profile of the English Majors of PNU-Mindanao in

terms of:

1.1 sex; and

1.2 year level?

2. What are the perceived advantages of the students in reportorial

activities in terms of:

2.1 Communication skills;

2.2 Critical thinking; and

2.3 Creativity?

3. Is there a significant difference on the perceived advantages of the

students when grouped according to profile?

4. What are the difficulties encountered by the students during

reportorial activities?

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study is considered beneficial to the following:

Curriculum Writers. This study would suggest revisions and improvement of

the implementation of subjects related to writing proficiency. It may present relevant

concepts in teaching writing to the students.

Researchers. The researchers can use this as their reference to their study with

the connection of writing proficiency.

Students. The BEE students who functioned as the target respondents of this

research will be able to know their individual writing proficiency levels.

Teachers. The teachers will know what strategies they should use in order to

hasten the skill in which the students find very difficult to grasp.

1.5 Scope and Delimitation of the Study


This study is limited on the context of assessing the perceptions of the English

Major students of Philippine Normal University-Mindanao, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur

on the reportorial activities in enhancing their communication skills, during the school

year 2016-2017.

Particularly, this study will only assess the difficulties and the perceived

advantages of the 2nd year and 3rd year English major students of PNU-Mindanao on the

reportorial activities that they have experienced in the classroom setting.
