DISCUSSION

Packed bed are usually used in chemical and process industries to perform separation
process such as absorption, stripping and distillation. In this experiment, Packed Column Gas
Absorption Process unit was used. There are three objective that need to be achieve, which are
operating vapor-liquid separation experiment using the process unit, analyze the sample using the
method of direct titration in order to determine the amount of NaOH reacted in the mixture with
the sample and calculate the concentration of CO2 being absorbed for every experimental time
interval.

The beginning of experiment, 1L of Sodium Hydroxide 0.01 M and 1L of acid

Hydrochloric 0.01 M was prepared. Meanwhile, the process unit was setting up for the liquid
flow and the type of packed column that was used is ceramics saddles. After that, the experiment
was continued with the absorption of CO2 into water from air-CO2 mixture. The sample was
collected about 10 mL within 10 minutes interval from outlet valve, V12. Diluted sodium
hydroxide and phenolphthalein as an indicator was mixed with the sample for the titration
process with acid Hydrochloric.

In the titration process, the volume of HCL that was used was ranged around 27.6 mL to
30.7mL. The average difference of volume for HCL from minutes 0 to 60 is 0.52 mL. From the
result obtained, the trend of the data is increase and then stayed constant at minutes 40 until 60.
Based on the theory, the data stayed constant because the water was completely dissolved the gas
(CO2) at minutes 40. The sample also was analyzed and the amount of NaOH reacted in the
mixture with a sample was determined. The NaOH reacted was obtained by calculate the
difference of moles NaOH added and moles of HCL used. The ranged of the amount NaOH
reacted is about 2.4×10-5 to -7×10-6 g moles.
The sample was analyzed and the amount of NaOH reacted in the mixture with sample was
determine. The ranged of result obtained within 10 minutes is about 2.4×10-5 to -7×10-6 g moles.
The trend of the result was increase from minutes 0 to 30 and it started to stay constant at
minutes 40 until 60. It show that the carbon dioxide was completely dissolve in the water when it
started constant.
